Now should I buy a silicone protective case thing or just a screen sticker thing or just use it as is?

It's really personal preference. I've had few different cases on my iPods but I find that I always end up taking them off and using as is. They just annoy me after a while I guess. Plus, Apple products are so beautiful as they are that I can't bear to cover them up! :p Ok I admit that I do have a skin on the front of my Classic but a case, no. Unless you're really rough on your stuff, you should be fine without it.

I get that occasionally with my 5G and music. I think it's the hard drive beginning to give out..

On mine it was/is definitely a problem with the way my ipod handles audiobooks and nothing to do with the HD. I know this partly 'cause I just upgraded to a brand new bigger HD and still have the problem :p And partly 'cause there's a huge thread on the problem on the audiobook builder forum (ps. I have a 5G too, replacing the HD is incredibly easy and pretty cheap if yours is stuffed)

It's a shame really. I'm waiting for the glorious day when they release a flash based classic (I still have hope )

Hey where did you find the Hard Drive for you 5th generation iPod? And when you say cheap, do you mean cheap compared to a new iPod or cheap compared to other new hard drives?

If you need to buy something that's totally useless, get a Shuffle. People with first-gen Zunes will be laughing at you.

I beg to differ about the shuffle. I have a 2nd gen model and it has been the best gadget investment I've made. For an exercise iPod, it can't be beat. I use it daily on my morning runs. It's small and lightweight, clips to just about anything, and has fantastic battery life. I wouldn't recommend it as an all-purpose iPod, but for what it does it is excellent.

...but failing any of those caveats, get a Nano. For an even better deal, wait for a refurb.

I thought this about the shuffles too until I got one for free when I bought my touch. I've used it in a few half marathons. I can't imagine not having it for for races now. I use the nano and touch any other time I'm at the gym or training.

Thanks.

The touch doesn't interest me at all.
I want a MP3 player not a touch screen PDA thats missing a phone.
Just kidding,

but really I'm never going to watch vids, record lectures, play games, count steps or any of the other things they can do. I just want to listen to music and audiobooks.

My phone has a camera, video camera and can go online sort of with opera. Guess how many times I have used those features in the last few years?
Never.

Same with my old sansa clip, it had a radio and I never used it too.

I guess I'm showing my age but all those extras just scream annoying to me. The only thing that seems cool to me on any of them is being able to see the album cover art while scrolling and syncing with itunes.

:)

Actually coverflow is the most annoying part of the iphone's ipod interface. Cool to show off but for day to day use it will just piss you off. You will have this problem on the nano as well. Apple really needs to make coverflow an optional feature.

I have a Classic, that I use once every couple weeks, maybe. I have a 2nd gen Shuffle that I use every day for about 4 hours (or more). I got it from the refurb store for $29. It's extremely portable, never falls out of my pocket when I bend over to pick something up at work, no one knows I have it unless I have the headphones on, and you can work the controls blindly.

The only thing I don't like about it is that you can lose your place in a long book or podcast if you aren't careful, then it takes forever to FF back to where you were. Not the most versatile, but perhaps the best bang-for-the buck if what you want to use your iPod for is listening to music (podcasts, maybe books) on the go.

Thinking about getting a ipod to use with my new imac.
I used to have a sansa clip but broke it.
I mainly rip and listen to audiobooks.
Any suggestions on what Ipod I should be looking for, refurbished deals etc...?
Thanks

craigslist it. People find extraordinary deals on clist. However, I'd purchase the 160GB iPod; you'd never have to worry about space :D
