I have played these on the Xbox, but they also have PS3 versions (and have not been listed as far as I saw during my quick scan):

Dead Space ($20 normal $15 at best buy starting tomorrow)
Mirror's Edge (FPS platforming, short but good, $20 or $15 same as above)
The Orange Box (5 games in one, including the outstanding Portal)

Dead Space definately looks cool, will have to add that to y list... thanks! I think I have about 8 or 10 titles to play through now, and with the amount of time I get to game that should keep me busy for a good year!

One thing to be mindful of is that some older versions have their advantages over both the Slim and their older brethren.

My PS3 which is about 1.5 years old is backwards compatible, so you can play PS2 games (which can be as low as $5 each used). Mine also has 4 USB ports instead of 2, so if you get Guitar Hero or an Eyecam, you won't run out of ports.

However I know the Slim is supposedly more energy conscious, which is nice, since sometimes I feel like my PS3 can heat an entire room!

i hear you thats the one reason why i upgraded my 60 to the slim I dont play as much ps2 games as my bro does i sold him my 60 and he paid the price for the slim but the slim is much cooler than the 60 gig model its nice in the winter but in the summer especally in TN it can be a lil to much.

You might want to also stop by Metacritic as well and look at their all-time top-scoring games. I find that site to be an invaluable resource, despite the fact that a lot of the reviews are self-promotion.

For what it's worth, my favorite games (which are all on the older side now):

Uncharted
Bioshock
Burnout Paradise (though they will take you to the cleaners on DLC packs compared to the cost of the game)
GTA4
Fallout 3
All of the Metar Gear Solid games

Orange Box is only on PC/360.

Well I'll be durned there is. Holy crap it's showing as $93 on amazon! Not listed at BestBuy. Ebgames doesn't have it available either...

Well, ONE seller on Amazon lists it for $93. There's no new copies available for whatever reason, but used ones at on Amazon and local Gamespot/EBGames stores are a reasonable $17-19.

Don't be afraid to buy stuff overseas, the PS3 doesn't have any zoning. I get cheap games from Japan in ENGLISH for about $40NZ off my Japanese friend.

Dredging this post back up... recommendations on a refurb/used 80gb (2nd gen model with BC) vs a new 120gb slim assuming the price is the same (or within $5 anyways, when some required accessories are added and bundles are accounted for, etc)?

I feel like the warranty and new machine is the safe bet, but having access to the never-played (for me) PS2 library would be really nice.

Honestly I would get the refurb BC. The PS2 library is probably the best in History and you can get all the great games just dirt cheap now-a-days. Plus the PS3 help smooth and upscale the games a bit so the ones that really pushed the PS2 really don't look too bad.

And you can always upgrade your HDD later if you run out of space.

Wall of text follows... TL;DR version: Got a PS3, thanks for the recommendations, COD4 and GH3 are a hoot, the PS3 sucks as a wireless streaming device (any help there appreciated).
---
Well, I got a "deal" on a "3rd gen" 80gb model. Not a great one, but I saved enough over a slim or 80gb w/ BC to offset most of the cost of GH3 (with wireless guitar) on Amazon, so not to terrible I suppose!

Anyways, GH is fun and my wife will at least play it (though she claims to not really like it - she hates anything she isn't good at right away  I might rebuy a GameCube just to get her Mario Party again :p). I rented COD4:MW and over the course of 4 days blasted through the single player game (on easy mode; I have no pride when it comes to this sort of thing)! What a blast that was... going to rent the Orange Box this week so I can (finally) play Portal... not really interested in HL2 (for shame, I know) - played through about half of HL2 on my iMac (boot camp) and was unimpressed. I think I just prefer the "realistic" shooters, or hybrid RPG/shooter type games? Maybe it's my "old Army self" coming through.

Anyways, point of this post is to first say THANKS to everyone who recommended games. Gave me enough leads to look into and decide to grab a PS3.

Second, I want to say that as a media device the PS3 is absolute rubbish. I was really, really disappointed when I got it home and found that it was completely incapable of streaming media wirelessly. My ATV can handle the same exact files over the same network (in the same exact place in the house) with ZERO issues; so I know it's not a network issue. I can load the files onto a USB drive and play them on the PS3 without issue (though it's inability to see the AC3 track is disappointing), so I know it's not a file incompatibility issue. It's just that the PS3 is complete rubbish as a media front end.

The Netflix instant watch is great though (and ironically enough the PS3 can wirelessly stream Netflix's "HD" movies over the internet, which are about the same bitrate as my DVD rips, without issue) and as a DVD/BD player it's certainly adequate. So, my hopes of bundling together a Netflix streaming box ($100), DVD player ($40), and an ATV ($150) and getting a free gaming system in the mix were dashed. In the end, I got a Netflix streaming device and a DVD player (I have no real use for a BD player at this time, but it will be nice to have one someday, I'm sure) and only paid $100 for a gaming system. Not to shabby, I guess. Maybe someday Sony will get off their ass and fix this thing. Or maybe Apple will upgrade the ATV and I will get a good deal on an old one or want a new one enough to end up with two.

Anyways, now that I have played some games I'm quite excited about my weekly free time to play more! Thanks again - and if you have any recommendations about getting the PS3 to work properly as a wireless streaming device, I'm all ears!

Not surprising for Sony - they really look down and frown upon anyone "ripping" DVD's so their devices tend to not be compatible with certain video formats.

The PS3 is a great machine though - get a couple of Blu-rays and you'll be really happy!!!

Er, as I said, the files work fine with the PS3 if I put them on a USB drive, so it's not a file incompatibility. I'm not really interested in any disc based media at this point, I'm far happier with my rip and stream setup.

Yes, that was the first thing I tried. Can you give me details of your setup? Wired/wireless? Router type/speed? File types you are streaming? PS3 hardware and software version? PS3MS version and settings?
