Most would still opt for using a IPhone with a Mac laptop because of iPhone's hotspot capability. This million app argument is pointless, as IOS/PadOS doesn't work like MacOS. Neither are you subject to Apple App Store only for anything additional that what comes with the OS involved. Sure we can use a iPad/Pro as a great deal cost-wise for what it represents/capable of, but it's not always the best solution for road warriors. I use all three as applicable.
Yeah, no reason to pay for a separate plan for data when most plans offer a Wifi hotspot these days. But he is right that the iPad is great for watching content and things like that. I wouldn't want to type much of anything on it though.

Except for about a million extra apps on the iPad and a far superior experience for content consumption with built-in 5G connectivity anytime, anywhere. Not all of us are creating videos in Final Cut Pro all day. How do you watch YouTube on a Mac, stuck inside browser tabs? If you think that is a superior experience, delete all the apps from your iPhone and just use Safari for everything, from logging into online banking to checking stock prices.
All of which can be done on a non-pro iPad, which doesn’t even come close to the cost of a MacBook.

Once you get out of media consumption, the MBA makes infinitely more sense.
