Best Finder alternatives / File managers

I'm trialling BTT at the moment on a 2018 Mac Mine running the latest production Big Sur OS (11.1).

I've set a 2 finger double tap trigger and set it to run a specific application (Forklift) with the option to send a CMD N if no window is open.

The issue I'm seeing is that half the time I execute the trigger the Forklift app appears (or disappears) from the application tray without the window I have for it being displayed on the desktop at all.

Is this sort of issue a known problem, or is there something I'm missing?

Personally, I've not used BTT for app launching, so I'm sorry that I can't help with that. I'd suggest using their official support forum instead.

Well, use your gesture to show/hide the application - I use a keyboard shortcut as below - and bonus! the keyboard shortcut above it gives you easy access to another BTT fab feature... the built in clipboard manager (so pressing cmd-option-v shows the clipboard manager rather than the simple command-V to paste the last copied item only)

psps I do have in Forklift preferences-general the option to 'restore windwos and tabs on startup' checked
plus forklift is launched hidden on login

Thanks for that. I configured as per your setting and I get the same thing happening when using the keyboard shortcut as well. If I open a Forklift window in twin view then hit the minimise control on the window (yellow -) if I then look to use the keyboard shortcut then toggling it makes the Forklift app icon pop in and out of the app bar, no window shows on screen. However if I have the Forklift window on screen and use the keyboard shortcut and then toggle it the window does appear and hide again. So is the trick not to use the minimise control on the forklift window?
 
Could we go back to the topic.

I returned q Space- Support is Worse than PF. No answer what so ever.

Charging 5 bucks for an app and offering no Support - s****cks

For me, Path Finder, ForkLift, and Finder all show different things in iCloud Drive. I've settled on using Finder exclusively when working with iCloud Drive since it's the only one showing my sync'd Desktop and Documents.

There was a blog post by Path Finder saying that the problem is Apple doesn't make the iCloud API public.

I don't know how iCloud Drive works. Is it like Dropbox, where there is a Dropbox folder and anything within that is synced? With QSpace, whatever I do inside the Dropbox folder gets synced. All my personal files and work files are in there.

However, what QSpace doesn't offer are the right-click Dropbox/Finder integrations nor the Dropbox badges that tell me the sync status. But then, I don't expect to see those integrations because this is QSpace, not Finder and the integrations are in Finder only.

Perhaps the fact that QSpace looks just like Finder has made you expect to see all Finder features present, including cloud services.

For Dropbox specific features, I can at least right-click and Reveal In Finder.

As for the poor support experience at Telegram... yeah, that definitely sucks.

same happens here - with PF and FL - but at least the mayor directory's are shown. Qspace didn't show any of those. But I think the main P** is the absolute lack of support. They are charging for an app and don't answer on any channel - :-((

Path Finder (excellent Finder alternative)
Forklift (excellent Finder alternative and ftp client)
muCommander (very complicated finder alternative)
Houdahspot (a Spotlight alternative NOT a Finder one)
man (nice server administration lite app NOT a finder alternative)
Liquifile (stay away of this one it can put your Mac into a comma)
Nimble Commander (another very complicated Finder alternative)
Crax Commander (very good alternative)
DCommander (Commander One clone)
Total Finder (is a better finder... seriously)
XtraFinder (Pathfinder wannabe)
Finder Path (it doesn't even show up on google)

My compilation was just the union of the apps in various articles/blogs that listed Finder alternatives. It's very useful to have someone that's actually used those apps curate the list, so thanks—good collaborative effort!

Miracles Happen - I got an answer from qspace support. Not helpfull but …

Not gonna See my Money again those guys
 
Transmit is somewhat usable as a two tab file manager. If there is a need in a good FTP/remote directory application, it's not the worst choice to rely on it as a file manager in addition.

You're OK with Forklift being an ftp client but for some reason hate Trasmit 5 for being an ftp client
 
Forklift can be used as an FTP client, but is mainly designed as a (dual pane) file manager; whereas Transmit is desgined as an FTP client which you could use for file managing if you’re desperate....

Totalfinder is absolutely excellent - but I moved over to Forklift due to the SiP issues which will only get tighter/more awkward in the future. With some tweaking and BetterTouchTool to the rescue, have been able to pretty much mimic Totalfinder with Forklift.

I've tried other file managers and found them frustrating for various reasons, usually because they've reinvented the wheel or ported the user experience, interface and keyboard shortcuts from the windows or Linux versions. QSpace very much feels like the native Finder but with more features.

After I've used it during a proper project, I'll report back.

Did you get any news from the dev about trial. I gave my version back, but I would like to test it again. But dev is very hard to answer
