Video notes

I'm looking for an app that will let me click a camera button while taking notes, snap a picture with the ipad2 camera, and have that shot immediately placed into the notes...which one does that?

It seems that Note Taker HD let's you insert pictures, but does it work as above?

I have the same question! The reason I purchased the Ipad2 was because it had the rear facing camera, I would love to use a program such as "Pear Note", which takes video & notes simultaneously. However, I have not found ANY Ipad application that can have the camera function on while taking notes. Does anyone know of an app that can do this?? PLease help!

Wow. There are all kinds of note taking apps and I feel very overwhelmed. I am just looking for a basic typing app that lets me highlight, bold, underline, and maybe even email to myself.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

For a basic "typing" type app (most of these are digital ink apps), give Elements a try.

I originally bought Penultimate, which is a good all around note taking and sketching app but it never really caught on with me so after reading this thread I looked at Upad but after reading the reviews for that I was taken to Note Taker HD, which I have been playing around with all afternoon. The zooming feature takes a bit of getting used to but once you get it, it is great.

Am still playing with it though to get used to the other features.

Nobody uses pages? I havent started fall semester yet but thats what I plan on using. It sure is a hell of alot better than evernote.

Hi Roofy,

I think this thread is more about handwriting apps ... there are some great ones with excellent workarounds for exact strokes and some that do not work so well.

Best ...

Notes Plus Newest Version Takes the Cake

Has anyone got any experience with the newest version of Notes Plus? I heard it just came out and I just want to know what people think of it.

Didn't know where to ask this but I guess this is a suitable thread.

I'm looking for an app that allows me to use the iPad as a sort of post-it note pad.

Reason I ask, is that in my line of work, I use a lot of post-it notes for quick notes which sometimes I will require keeping until they need throwing away or they're for quick notes which I will later throw away on the same day.

Is there any app that allows me to use a stylus to write on the iPad to quick jot down (like a notepad) and possibly have a save function that keeps these little notes?

(I'm trying to cut down my footprint of killing trees :D)

Post-it notes

@chkenwing

I've been trying out FastFinga 3 on my iPad 2, and it definitely does what you're after and a lot more (things like inserting a timestamp, tick boxes, handwritten or typed notes, drawings, voice notes, etc).

That said, there are a lot of apps to choose from, and a lot of it is down to personal preference.

I'd recommend trying out most of what's been suggested in this thread to find what you feel most comfortable with.

My favorite note taking app right now is Goodnotes. While perhaps not the most feature rich, I like how its interface is simple and unintrusive.

Of the features you list, it includes:
- Multiple pages (with individually customizable backgrounds; you can even use an image)
- Folders
- Keyboard typing
- Hand writing
- Text formating (Fonts, colors)
- Palm protection
- pdf export
- pdf notes
- Writing resizer (zoom)
- Dropbox
- WiFi files transfer
- No account required
- Multitasking

It costs $3.99.

I really like Notebooks but the problem is that many of the iPad notebook apps don't make companion computer apps. I just found out that Notebooks is bringing out a computer version and I am so excited.

This will allow me to sync between my MacBook Pro, iPad and iPhone. As a project manager, I really like the way Notebooks let me create an individual notebook for each project I am managing. I have found taking notes during meetings with my iPad2 pretty easy and would love the functionality of using my MBP sometimes.

Also, Notebooks syncs with Dropbox, so I know my notes are safe in the cloud. Can't wait till they come out with the Mac version of this app - I will definitely line up for that. In the meantime, I am using Evernote since it is available across multiple platforms.

Did anyone ever find one that does handwriting recognition? That's the one feature I envy most on my boss' Android tablet (built-in Notes Mobile).

Meanwhile, the app I use that's not even in the list is CaptureNotes 2.

NotesPlus version 3 has handwriting recognition (in app purchase) and it works pretty well. Over all the app is great, its the one i use to take notes in meetings.
They will also be supporting some smart pens soon: Byzero, iPen and Jot touch

I think I've purchased EVER Note Taking app in the App Store, lol. Notability is STILL the one to beat for me. Only one area that it needs improvement on for me is the ability to create sub-folders when creating & saving notes. The way it is now, you can only create a "Category" and a "Subject".

My requirements:

ease of use
Pen Friendly
convert to PDF
auto syncing to Dropbox
voice recording capability
ability to easily categorize my notes. (Notability lacks in this area; I need and want sub-folders)

I really like Notability. My favorite aspect of the app is that you can organize notes in an outline format. I mainly use it to keep track of stuff I need to do, and research in regards to the apps I am working on.

So far Remarks takes the checkered flag here, especially on my first gen iPad. Works great.

Notes Plus is a close second. Just got that the other day to see what the well deserved hoopla was all about.

Updated Comparisons

So, I've tried several handwriting apps, not all - but many. I also go to YouTube and try to keep up with ones that I haven't bought. I'm always looking a compelling reason to try a new one - to see if it's better than the one I'm using now! They're all constantly changing - better and better.

Here's a history of the handwriting apps I've liked, and what made me switch. (BTW ... I would love to hear similar stories from others. Are you still using the handwriting app you were first happy with? How many times have you switched to a new app? What features made you switch? Please consider sharing that information here.)

My History ...

Note Taker HD
The first one I settled on was Note Taker HD. This was quite a long time ago. I was excited about how well the zoom window worked. However, now nearly all good handwriting apps use a zoom window. Things may have changed for this app by now, but back then there were two things I didn't like about Note Taker HD - (1) jaggy marks when zoomed in. Seems the smoothing wasn't very good. (BTW ... other apps that boasted "smoothing" were over smoothing - and missing some of the intended characteristics of the stroke.) (2) The second thing that I didn't like about this app was it's GUI interface. The organization was lacking a bit. I found quickly found another app that addressed both of these dislikes, and also used the zooming window feature that I did like about Note Taker HD.

UPAD
IMO, UPad is still a fantastic handwriting app. I still think it has one of the most accurate stroke recognition engines out there. It's very quick and accurately follows the intended stroke with a fantastic balance between filtering and accurately. It's great. There's only one thing that I feel could improve UPad ... that would be how the ZOOM WINDOW ADVANCE FUNCTION works. As it is, (and, by the way several handwriting zoom windows work this way ) when you enter into that last bit of the zoom window, the app waits for writing to stop for a short amount of time - and then snaps the window to the next section. That works fine for about 80% of the time - but being in the MIDDLE OF A WORD RIGHT THERE, or, having to dot an "i" or cross a "t" right there sometimes was not done quickly enough by me. The dotting and crossing was done in the next section. Also, since this happens often, you enter into a mode of writing quickly - which causes you to become messy! Still, this is a great app - and probably one of the best as far as accurately following intended strokes. But I soon found a better app that addresses this complaint.

Notes Plus
Since I have been investigating several handwriting apps - I have populated a "HANDWRITING APPS" folder on my iPad with several apps. I have bought, tied, and quickly wrote off several that have just sat in that folder unused! One day, I decided to go back and try a few of them again since it had been quite a while since I originally bought several of them. Notes Plus was one of those that I bought back in the beginning. I quickly found that it has gone through lots of changes - I was pleasantly surprised! If you haven't tried this app lately - you owe it to yourself to give it another try. You may have been like me and just wrote it off in the past, but may be pleasantly surprised by it now.

Here's what I really like about this app - it's ZOOM WINDOW ADVANCE FUNCTION ! There is no "marked off" last section visible to you. But once you write past 50% of the window, you then see the end of your writing repeated in the starting third of the window. Why is this great? Because, you have the choice to use either the remaining last half OR start over in the first third! Either way is fine. If you just ended a word, then start the box over - but if you're in the middle of a word, well, then just complete it. This app is the only one that has really solved the problem of a zoom window being as seamless as possible to a natural workflow of writing!

There are a lot of bells and whistles about this app, but for basic handwriting - and really using that feature - this seems to be the best app out there.

Please let me know if there's another app that works it's zoom window like this!

Now, having said that, there are some hic-ups every now an then with this app. It's stroke recognition engine is very very good - it smooths just fine and it does follow the intended stroke. It's quick and responsive on my iPad 2. But every now and then, it seems to just blank out for a split second during following a stroke; when it does, it simply decides to draw a straight line from before it blanked out to when it returns back to following! This may cause the lower part of a "p" to get chopped off. But, this is a rare occurrence - and I do tend to write in cursive. Not sure this would happen if you print - which it seems most people do. Still, this happens so infrequently, and I'm noticing less and less with each update, I'm very happy to live with this app as is.

Perhaps there may be a better app I still need to find. I look forward hearing recent updates from other. Like I said earlier, it's hard to keep up ... things are constantly changing! :)

You might want to check out Remarks. It has very very fluid handwriting on there. It lets you simply make notebooks for notetaking, plus you can edit PDF files. One feature I do like with Remarks is that you can autosync a folder full of files with DropBox.

I also do really like Notes Plus, however the handwriting isn't as fluid on it unless I close every app in my tray. But it is a very very nice app.

My other app on my iPad is DocAS, which I find to be about the same in quality as the other two.
