Many Android tablets went with 16:9 or 16:10 ratios over the years but it makes them next to useless in portrait orientation and relegates them to video player duties alone. The iPad aspect ratio has been chosen to provide the best compromise for the different types of content being consumed and created on it. From photos to e-magazines to web content to documents and of course video content. It's really only for video content that it is slightly more of a compromise than in other areas so overall I'd say Apple got it right.

Bear in mind that in the early stages of iPad development, and probably more recently, Apple will have almost certainly built prototypes of varying aspect ratios and sizes and so they were in the best position to make that call.

Spot on!

All comments are true. I guess it means I do not need a larger iPad. Keep the Mini for where being compact matters and stick with MacBooks for Movies on Plane use.

I’d at least wait to see if Apple manage to get the physical size and weight of the 12.9” iPad down first - I.e by cutting the bezels down and even just giving it the make over they gave the 10.5” last year.

I fly (500 plus hours internationally in the last couple of years) with my 12.9 iPad. I use both the ASK and Logitech Slim Combo. I've never had any issues it in the "cheap seats". However, three weeks ago I flew on a smaller plane. While on the smaller plane I was way to cramped to use the ASK when the gentleman in front of me reclined his seat.

Here's how I personally buy products, how will I use it the most? If I were going to spend most of my time on small planes then I would buy accordingly. But if you only fly occasionally then I wouldn't be overly concerned about the difference between the 12.9 and 10.5. The additional screen is worth it to me.

This. I wouldn’t let the small quarters of a several hour flight dictate size of my device if the resulting size is detrimental to what I am going to use the device for most of the time. If that’s the case I’ll switch to my phone instead.

Just came back from holiday, using budget airline, had no problem using the 12.9 iPad on the plane. I think this is just personal preference.

Here's a few photos that I posted in my Yoga Book thread...
The YB is a 10.1" 2-in-1 (mine is the Android version). It's hard to see but the seatback in front of me is fully reclined. Combined with the 16:10 AR of the screen and continuous angle of the hinge, it can "tuck back" on the tray table far more than the 12.9 Pro did. It was quite comfortable for me to type on it... near impossible with the 12.9 Pro since the Pro had to be drawn in closer to me due to its size, AR, and lack of screen angle. If anyone has their own photos of their devices being used on a plane, that might be helpful.

I would say that it depends on how you fly.
I mostly fly in Y, and found that I can use comfortably a 10.5" iPad pro with the smart keyboard, as well as an 11" MBA, but not a 13" MBP, especially when the passenger in front of me reclines (in that case, I can essentially not open the laptop so that I can type and see the screen in the same time). I would be concerned that the 12.9" iPad would be like the 13" MBP.
When I fly premium economy or (very rarely) J, any laptop feels ok, so the 12.9" iPad Pro would be my choice in that case.

If you do a lot of trips that are long enough for you to watch a movie or episode of a tv show then I would put up with the larger footprint of the 12 inch. Yes the 10.5 is a good size but for prolonged use it's more comfortable to stare at a bigger screen.

I can only speak on the 10.5, which. I have and use on every flight and I fly a lot. I love the portability of this device and it has been perfect for me on flights in every way. I think the bigger screen would be nice, but I am happy with the trade off of portability. The 10.5 is perfect in my lap or on the seat try. Never had any space issues and I use the Apple Smart Keyboard with mine

I know this is a bit off topic, but I still love the iPad mini for traveling. I had an 8 day international trip recently in which I was traveling a lot (airplanes, buses, cars, trains) and the iPad mini was the perfect size for any occasion. Big enough to watch movies, web browsing, and some emails and yet small and light enough to quickly take out and put away at any time. I’ll really miss any potential future iPad mini updates if Apple decides to let it die.

I’ve taken plenty of economy flights with the 12.9 iPad. As well as long distance coach/train rides. Perfectly fine in every situation. Much better than the 9.7 I used to have previously. It’s great for watching content & editing pics to pass the time.

Is the iPad Mini line dead?

A lot of people seem to think it won’t receive anymore updates. But I hope it does!
