i've been using synk pro to backup my mac since...forever. all i want is an identical mirror of my mac at any given moment; i don't need time machine's endless versions of files, etc. i take responsibility for this, i just want my mac mirrored. i use synk pro to do the same thing for two external drives.

this has all worked pretty well for years. but had a crisis with the app recently, and tech support has been sketchy about it.

so...can CCC, or superduper (for example) do this for me? mirror my mac drive, and several external drives? or is there another app to recommend?

thanx! :D

Just buy NAS - network attached storage with RAID and have your files in there rather than at your laptop. Your NAS can run automated backups to external drives for extra redundancy.

Files that you want to have locally at your laptop, - place in DropBox or Google Drive (or both) folders, they will sync with cloud automatically.

I do not have experience with iCloud, but there should be similar functionality.

Amazon gives their "drive" as well.

P.S. There's also Rsync, that is unix and free software for synchronizing files. I'm sure there's version for MAC OS X. http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/using_rsync_keep_your_files_sync_0, and http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/rsync_backup_all_your_data_single_terminal_command

P.P.S. The NAS I have (DNS-320 afair) also runs rsync. So if you do smart NAS shopping, and buy the one with rsync, not only you'll get extra network storage, but automated scheduled backups between your NAS and MAC. The price will not be much higher (if any) than having several backup USB drives.

as posted, i already purchased carbon copy cloner...and am happy. PLUS, logic is my main app...lots of plugins, samples, etc.. so the dropbox idea isn't right for me.

PLUS...all i want to do is backup my mac, not find an alternative way to work...

thanx for ideas tho...

If you bought something already, then that solves it. But take a look at links on Rsync I posted - it's very nice and flexible mirroring solution.

If you do coding, then for that kind of information IMO completely different approach exists - repositories like CVS, SVN or GIT. Not only they serve as backup, but also give you a lot of coding specific conveniences.

For anyone else...the free version of SuperDuper does almost everything you get from the paid version and it's updated for ML.

I use CCC, although it is an older version before they started charging for it. I use it every couple of days to keep my bootable backup partition up-to-date. I also have Time Machine backing things up every hour. For work/school documents, I store those in Dropbox as well, just in case, and would also store my iPhoto library if it wasn't so huge. You can never have too many different backups.

Edit: I wish Apple would allow these types of programs in the App Store now that they charge to use them. I have a lot of store credit and would definitely use it to buy a cloning app, but my old version of CCC is still working for now.
