I love the look, so clean! I have had two monitors in various configurations since 2001, soooooooo nice to only have one. Unfortunately, I have to travel coast to coast for the next couple weeks (I know could be worse) so I am gonna have to wait to order. My thinking is i7/256 SSD/8gb and upgrade later.

I ordered the i7 with 1Tb and 32Gb

Anyone have experience with either of these Dell monitors (U2715H and P3715Q)? They are both around $430 at Amazon and look like they'd be good for non-gaming use.

The U2715 is QHD, 2560 x 1440 and at 27" I find the PPI to be a touch low (since I spend significant amount of time in text, coding/writing). I'm running two U2518, also 2560 x 1440, but they're 25" displays, so text is a bit tighter. In general, I can't say enough good things about Dell displays, these have outstanding stands, excellent calibration, very tiny bezels, 3 year warranty (I've dealt with Dell replacement, good customer service). They were a steal at under $600 for the pair, Best Buy sale.

Lots of good choices. If possible stick with an IPS panel and a proper monitor, not a TV. It really depends on how big you want, and what sort of pixel density you prefer.

I'm a developer, and I really prefer 2 displays over a single larger one. I like the flexibility of arrangement, separate orientation, having the option for some open space between them (vs. trapped behind the wall-o-display :D), and for some of my workflow, I'll do one display, full screen in a VM, so I like having the physical "system" isolation between the displays. FWIW, I do have a pretty big desk (59x30" desk top, might even do a 72" next time) and work from home, so my space isn't really constrained - and I realize this is very subjective, just wanted to add my $0.02 :)

do you really need to go 4k if you are not going to be watching video much on it ?

I have no expertise when it comes to monitors and you certainly could be correct. I use my mini primarily for internet and email, and seldom for videos. Perhaps the Dell U2415 mentioned above would be a good choice for me.

The day I picked up the iPhone 4s for the first time was the day I decided all devices would eventually need retina. I’m typing this on a retina screen without a graphic in sight and would not want to be without.

That said, there are different ways to do retina and 5k still has a substantial premium. Doing a mini from scratch I would probably do dual 4Ks that rotate, creating parallel page displays.

Like a modern version of the Radius I hooked up to the Centris 610 back in the day. We don’t do a lot of paper these days but we do a crap ton of scrolling so the taller the better.

Video Support
Support for the following combination of maximum concurrent display setups:

  • Up to three displays:
  • Two displays with 4096-by-2304 resolution at 60Hz connected via Thunderbolt 3 plus one display with 4096-by-2160 resolution at 60Hz connected via HDMI 2.0
or

  • Up to two displays:
  • One display with 5120-by-2880 resolution at 60Hz connected via Thunderbolt 3 plus one display with 4096-by-2160 resolution at 60Hz connected via HDMI 2.0
Guess I can't power two 5k LGs with it both at full res

My only requirements are for 4K, 24"-32" screen and, with weekly calibration, accurate colour rendition.

I don't need the monitor to power anything, it needn't have speakers, a microphone or a web camera, and I don't care what connection it uses.

A new Eizo Color Edge is more than I'm prepared to pay, but I'm good for up to $1500.

Any suggestions?

I'm not surprised your not up to paying for the Eizo Color Edge displays, given the latest 31" widescreen-4K (17:9) "CG319X" model is a mere £4400. Sure it's a so-called 'reference' display, so it's not even 5K, but still, you could buy nearly four LG 5K's for that money. Blimey!

If you want to wait I would probably go for the LG 32ul950 especially if you need a thunderbolt 3 port. If you don't the 32ud99 is an excellent monitor with great factory calibrated color at almost half the price.

I tend to stick with LG monitors as they do tend to have the best color (to my eyes) and ports available in a monitor. Options are limited if you need a monitor with a greater than 60fps refresh rate at 4k. That said, I don't think I would immediately spring more than 1k for a monitor again unless I HAD to have it now and couldn't hold off.

B&H Photo posted the new thunderbolt 3 BenQ PD3220U 4K Designer monitor for pre-order.

$1199.99 but it is in the designer line.

I have an older Eizo Color Edge and they are worth every penny, but I keep mine in another country and I'm not buying another for this computer :)

However, my experience with the Eizo goes a long way to explaining why I'm looking for a monitor that does colour well, and couldn't care less about whether it powers anything, has speakers, what the connection is, etc.

I think that you're paying a significant premium for the Thunderbolt 3 connection. Fine if you have a reason to do so, but otherwise you're paying probably $200-$300 extra for a connection that you don't need.

Also maybe worth pointing out that a lot of the current monitors are designed, and priced, to power a laptop and peripherals, which a Mac mini monitor doesn't need to do.

This is exactly my plan, using Dell P2415Q's (4K@24"). Not sure how I'll end up using them (orientation-wise) but they seem pretty flexible, and I believe window management will be better with two separate monitors compared to a single 'larger' one (e.g. comparing to an ultrawide)

I'm looking for a decently-priced 24-inch monitor with sharp text and have been considering the Dell P2415Q. It's 4K and goes for about $350. The reviews are good given the price and Dells monitors are generally reliable.

One concern I have is with scaling--things look awfully small on a 4K 24-inch display. I assume you can use scaled resolution in macOS preferences to fix this, but it's something that need to be confirmed.

I run my 2415 at 2304x1296 just for some extra room, but yeah by default it sets it to 1080p retina.

My only recommendation against the Dells is I've intermittently had wake from sleep issues, and I know that this was a problem depending on models and makes; I'm still on Sierra, however, so I'm not sure if either updates from Dell's side or Apple's have improved this. Also, the 2415 (unless it's been updated) does not have HDMI 2.0 so you can only get 4K30Hz from the HDMI cable.

Looks pretty sweet in a 3UP configuration:

Ive got a 27uk600 as don't need internal speakers but same screen as the uk850. Its fantastic an also a really good gaming monitor with short refresh rates. This would be my recommendation 100% if just after a high quality screen an not too expensive!
