Is there a free news site you can download and read offline?
I recommend the Guardian for online reading -- everything is free online. Members can download articles to read offline. I've been reading the site for a few months (and decided to subscribe in order to support good non-biased journalism) and I find the articles to be of high quality and thoughtful.

How do you use Newsify? Any tips?

You just connect to your favorite RSS feeds of your various news sites with Newsify.
I also like Feedly and Heartfeed (looks like former Pulse News app) a lot.

Pulp looks good but I'd like an app that I can have on all my devices, Mac, iPad and iPhone.

Feedly can be accessed via iPhone/iPad and via Mac in your internet browser by going to Feedly. I don't think the other two mentioned apps offer that though.

Is The Times (London) Digital edition for iPad and iPhone worth £26 a month?

Wow I'm surprised... I use Google Play Newsstand daily on my iPad. Maybe because I come from Android but I like that the best. Google News isn't bad either but I like the Newsstand's way of giving me just the article without all the other crap.

I have used and continue to use https://newsblur.com/ but it's not as pretty as Feedly.

I'm on a half price deal at the moment that is about to end so thinking of cancelling. I do like reading in depth articles thought and not just "headlines".

Which news apps you use, might depend on where you live, and which language you prefer. Of course, google news or BBC is ok for international use,but I also would try finding something more local.

Well, from today I’ve gone fully digital for my news consumption. Using the London Times app on subscription.

I've been all digital for years—I really prefer it. Recycling is a drag, particularly for a daily! Despite the fact that I work in traditional media. :)

NY Times - Digital only; LA Times - Digital only. I subscribe to Wired & The New Yorker in both digital and print, only because there's no cost benefit. I recently got the NYT to drop my subscription price for 1 year to the intro price they're offering new subscribers (FYI—it might work for you with your news'paper').
