I'd also recommend an iPhone.

My mum has the iPhone 4 and she's had it since it launched. When she saw me with my galaxy phones a few years ago she decided that she wanted to get one, I tried to talk her out of getting one and tried to persuade her to just upgrade to another iPhone. Anyhow she got the S3 and in the two years that she's had it she has barely used it. She continues to use her iPhone. I've tried to show her how to use the Samsung phone lots of times but she forgets and reverts back to her iPhone. She has another upgrade due and keeps on talking about getting another samsung phone as she says she likes my phones and has heard from her colleagues that samsung are better. She really needs to get another iPhone though before her iPhone 4 blows up!

----------

I'm a long time iPhone user. I currently use an iPhone 5S. I've experienced Android with Samsung and HTC phones just to compare both OS's. Android is *not* simple to use. Especially since your father has never used a smartphone before, I don't think he'll find Android simple at all. IMO, the iPhone is an excellent choice. iOS is much more simple and very minimal than Android. It doesn't have to be an iPhone 5S. Consider the iPhone 4/4S.

I think it depends on the user. If you're used to using a windows PC then android may be incredibly intuitive. To me it is anyway. I find it more intuitive that ios because it's logical.

It definitely depends on the user. My step mother had an Android phone and was always confused by the settings. She has an iPhone 5S now and loves it. She is a retired IT manager believe it or not! lol...I didn't find Android to be particularly intuitive in all the years I used it to be honest. I found my way around it ok as I am young and have been brought up in the Windows era and fiddle with gadgets until I find how they work, but the iPhone is extremely simple in comparison. I like simple phones and can't be bothered fussing around customising and learning several short cuts to the settings and app windows. Its the be all and end all for some but not for everyone.

For the older generation who generally struggle with gadgets, I don't think iOS can be beaten. :)

Except it's a total load of ********. But don't let that get into they way into your obvious bias.

Well I took the ios image to be a positive one, those people looked like they were having a lot of fun, they looked happy and were enjoying using their device. That's how I generally feel when I'm using my ios device. I think the second picture sums up my feeling with Android. My Android devices feel powerful to me and satisfy my techy cravings.

My Mum uses an iPhone 4 and is about to try out my old Galaxy S4 - let's see how that goes, she's OK with phones tbh.

My Dad, I'm going to just keep it as simple as possible. Use the Easy HomeScreen launcher, keep everything dead simple.

That's the advantage with Android, he tried the iPhone 4 before and just didn't like it much.

Let's see, taking him to a phone shop now... Thanks for all the advice, beautiful people!

For simplicity sake, I do think the iPhone is your best bet but if he doesn't like the iPhone. Why not Galaxy S4 or S5?

I took it to be the obvious troll post it was meant to be.

I've setup smartphones for my 71-year old grandmother, and my 50-year old father. Even iPhones confuse them, so I'd actually suggest a combination of an Android (such as a Moto G) with Big Launcher.

Big Launcher is designed for less-than-tech-savvy people. The app is a little expensive, but it's perfect for Smartphone users who need access to rather basic features.

Completely agree.

In the end, we just picked up a Galaxy SIII Mini. He liked the size etc, and the Samsung Easy Home launcher thing is pretty good.

It's his first proper venture into smartphones, he's so excited :)

If the S4 is too big....then the S4 mini might work.
Edit:......replied too late nevermind! :)

I was gonna suggest any of the smaller Samsung phones. They're small, cheap, easy to use, lightweight, etc.

That's great. The most important thing is that *he* likes the phone.

Awesome glad you found something that works. Samsung's easy mode is a great feature for people who have trouble with a full modern mobile OS.
