You should try it again (and maybe dig a bit deeper into it's capabilities). It's by far the most powerful GUI text editor on the mac.

Prob. try again with 2.0.

Its way too "VIMmy" for me. Feels like a unix edtior with a mac face on top, which is what a lot of people like I understand...

I use bbedit and except for code completion, I can make this thing run cricles for my workflow.

For those of you who may be familiar with UltraEdit in the Windows world. My software development company is currently developing a very similar Programmers editor for Mac OSX.

Textmate. I've yet to find anything close to it. The bundle editor alone is worth the switch.

I use TextMate and every day I'm finding more and more features it has.

I use Eclipse on my PC (runs on mac too) instead of dreamweaver and I'm enjoying the change.

So I'd say TM or Eclipse are good options.

To the OP, you could also run HTML-Kit in Windows through Fusion. Maybe Parallels, I don't know, I don't have that. I never really found a Mac replacement for HTML-Kit that I thought was better or on par.

That said, I haven't used Textmate or Coda. But they aren't free either. And I don't do webbuilding as a career so I don't want to pay for an editor.

I totally agree with you... but at the moment the best one I've found that handles remote access perfectly is Coda (for mac)... but the best pure editor was TextMate... it's just too bad that it didn't have any support for remote file access..

Aptana

Have any of you tried aptana? it's pretty bad ass... works for mac/linux/windows.

FREE and VERY feature rich

i just read somewhere that it is somehow related to eclipse

I use vim. After getting past the initial hump of learning how to use it, I now see why so many people swear by it. You should seriously look into it or MacVim. If you don't want to go that route, which is understandable, then I would suggest Textmate or Coda. Although Smultron and TextWrangler are both very good and they are free, but then again so is vim.

I use SubEthaEdit, but after reading this thread I'll be giving a shot to the other apps listed.
If you work on a collaborative environment though, I think SubEtha would be hard to beat.

Coda has subetha built in for anyone on Bonjour with you, sadly I'm the only Mac amongst windows so I haven't really been able to use it with anyone.

I swear by Taco (only the old free version though...), it's simple and to the point...I used Coda for a week and couldn't stand it. It felt bloated to me. I much prefer having Taco, Terminal, Cyberduck, Firefox and a Finder window, than to have it all in one place, as idyllic as that might seem.

Coda & BBedit are two great choices, if your looking for something a little bit stronger, try zend or eclipse (with the php extension of course)

I use Vi for it's great syntax highlighting...

Seriously.. I use TextMate now, I used to use DW, but it just didn't work with me, I hate it's CC, and it was crappy for AJAX.

Aptana is way too over-featured for me, it's not that it's slow it's just obnoxious and in your face, all these little icons that are seemingly meaningless. I use ZEND sometimes just for Code analyzer (only recently), I've been contemplating Coda... the only problem for me, is I'll have 60inches, of useless screen space. Maybe I'll stop using the <return> key.

Taco Edit

Taco HTML Edit 2.0. I'm finding it very useful and light weight (with the title bar off.)

The tabbed interface a big plus, coming from TextEdit.

It gives you the ability to edit files from within Cyberduck (without the time consuming download-upload part with using Text Edit).
When you click Edit in Cyberduck, Taco opens, the file in a new tab. Then all you need to do is hit command-s, and the file uploads, it's great.

EDIT: Wow, Flow looks flash.

I also use BBEdit from Bare Bones Software. I've used it for years, and it's a very powerful text editor designed for programming in various languages.

I like! It needs to mature a little bit before I can use it exclusively, however it might be something that I would use to edit sites real fast. Ill have to see how much I use it in the next 15 days before my trial expires.

Inverting the colors in the editor might be nice... ;)

What does this have to do with anything? Eclipse is written in Java and it beats the heck out of any other Java IDE I've used.

But anyways, for PHP my vote is vim.
Because java is clunky and slow and makes for a horrid UI, which makes it a poor working environment.

Geany through MacPorts

I was using Ubuntu for last 2 years and got MacBook last week. I was loving Geany on Ubuntu for editing PHP files as it just simple and good syntax highlighting especially with code folding.

I just installed Geany through MacPorts and it seems to serve the purpose.
