Anyone with an M1 Mini have the LG 38" Ultrawide 38WK95C-W? I really like this monitor but heard of some issues with Ultrawides and M1 Mini. Can anyone confirm if this one works fine with the M1? Thanks

This is a software issue, introduced by macOS 11.1. Apple has already acknowledged this, so it will be fixed fairly soon. Possibly it already is with the 11.2 beta?

I have an 'AOC CU34G2X 34" QHD 144Hz HDMI DP FreeSync UltraWide Curved LED Gaming Monitor'. Apologies for the long title, I got it from the product page at Micro Center (where I bought it). It was $450, and AOC monitors don't stay in stock long, at least not at the local Micro Center.

I have used it for about a month and a half with:
  • Intel 2014 Mac mini with a Thunderbolt 2 to DisplayPort cable: Used every day (I use it connect to my work VDI as well as personal usage). It has been at a resolution of 3440 x 1440 and a refresh rate of 60 Hz (the highest it will go). Very clean and crisp / sharp - I love using it, much more than the two 24" normal aspect monitors I was using before (both were good monitors, and one was an AOC).
  • M1 MacBook Pro with a Thunderbolt 3 / USB C to DisplayPort cable: Used a few times with the AOC, I normally use my laptops without external monitors. However, the monitor works great with my MBP when I have used it (including connecting to the work VDI) and I get a 3440 x 1440 resolution and a refresh rate of 144 Hz (maximum rate).
  • I also connected both of my Macs to the AOC with an HDMI to HDMI cable for the mini and a Thunderbolt 3 / USB C to HDMI via an external dock for the MBP. This was mainly to confirm HMDI would work, and the resolution was the same and the quality of what was displayed looked the same.
The results with the M1 MBP makes me think that when I replace the 2014 Mac mini with an Apple Silicon desktop Mac I can get the 144 Hz refresh rate. Which is good, because I want ny next desktop Mac to be able to use the full specs of the monitor (3440 x 1440 at 144 Hz).

I found a lot of reviews about the AOC CU34G2X, including deeper dives than I cared about into the minutia of monitor specs. So if anyone is interested, you should be able to find plenty of info about this monitor.

How is the text? I have a Dell P2415Q, which is 2180 horizontal resolution with my MacBook Pro and it's like a lovely huge retina screen. Text is tack sharp. Next to it, I have a Dell P2419H, which only goes to 1080, and the text is not great. A bit blurry. I just ordered a new Dell S3221QS to replace both monitors because of the 2160 4k resolution but I really wanted an ultrawide like the LG but it only went to 1440 resolution. Any thoughts?

PS: I do like the idea of built in speakers on the S3221QS, since I'm going to be hooking it up to a M1 Mac mini.

Did you ever end up getting the Dell S3221QS? If so, what do you have it connected to and how's it working out for you?

Thank goodness you asked me this question, as i went to check and if I hadn’t, i could have ruined my set up.

On the issue of the Dell 3818 working with macOS , i am on the old M3B103 firmware, This version works well with the Mac, the newer version M3B106 DOES NOT PLAY WELL WITH MAC, i almost updated and thankfully hit a toxin of people with issues, and dell saying they wont be fixing it.

So just a warning, i am fortunate i purchased mine with that version, and not one today that may have shipped with the newer version, as its not backwards compatible either.
I just got my new M1 Mac mini. It works great with the monitor, just not the peripherals that are connected to it. I use a wired keyboard (forced onto a PC for work) and other items...nothing seems to work. Called tech support and got no assistance. Am pissed to the point of returning this thing...I have limited space like most people. Everything works great on my 2016 MBP

I went through the same experience just this past week trying to get my new office rig situated (newly ordered Dell u3818 and M1 mac mini). Could only get additional ports to work if I use HDMI and a second USB cable to power the remaining ports (need them for webcam/keyboard).

I do love the ratio and size to replace a dual monitor setup (I am migrating from 2x27" iMAC setup). So I really want to find a 38" ultrawide that will play nice. I need to double-check the resolution again, and maybe it's because my primary 27" screen that I'm moving from is (5120x2880), but something just seemed off on the u3818.

Maybe one of the Lg38s?

for the most part the monitor works, my external HDD plug in and work, it’s when the monitor sleeps, the I get warnings of disconnecting my HDD incorrectly. So I end up not using any of the ports other than to charge a device or two while I am working.

The monitor is connected via THunderbolt and a Ts3 , works the same direct or through the caldigit.

but I am on old firmware, can’t update.

a friend wants my Dell 3818 ,so I am hunting for a compatible one, the LG always comes up in the 38 to 49 sizes, but stock locally is slim, and expensive Over here. It’s cheaper to hold out for a new 32 inch iMac lol if that materializes one day.

Sorry if this is a bit too off-topic, but this was one of the more recently-discussed threads, so I'm hoping my question may get more attention. FWIW, I have a recent MBP 16. If I'm willing to live without the "single TB/USB-C cable" aspect is the Dell U3818DW a perfectly fine monitor to use with macOS?

IOW, are all of the problems with that monitor related only to when someone attempts to use it with a single USB-C cable and if I am willing to charge my MacBook separately, ignore the on-board USB ports of the Dell, and just use it strictly as a monitor (via a TB/USB-C to ??? cable) then should it work perfectly great, even with the latest Dell firmware?

I think there are 2 things to keep in mind with the U3818DW (at least with my M1 mini). The USB-C connection does not also power the USB ports on the monitor (and I'm assuming not charge back to, in your case, MBP). The video signal works via USB-C to USB-C. In my case, I wanted to use the additional ports on the monitor, so I had to use HDMI and a USB cable to get both video and USB power to the monitor.

The other issue I've had is the color space problem, rgb vs ycbcr. I've not been able to get RGB color space via USB-C to USB-C or HDMI to HDMI.

I"m a bit disappointed in fact. i can only use HDMI with the M1 mac mini because a DP connection causes it to go black every 11 seconds for a couple of seconds rendering it unusable. It also sometimes has little "cells" appear when it's been on for a while.

Sorry, can you elaborate on this? I'm not clear on the implications of it.

Yup. That's the story here with U3818DW. I got these (M1 mini and U3818DW) both at the same time, so I can't personally attest to the difference between the 2 color spaces on the M1 (since I can't get RGB on it currently with this monitor).

Have narrowed this problem down to the 60Hz refresh rate. 50Hz and lower doesn’t seem to do it. Ano there’s no problem at all on a smaller monitor, so maybe the M1 is struggling with the display density and frequency?

I always wonder when people say “best”, if they truly mean price is no object.

For something one uses every day for one's job, for the most part it isn't. Consider how much people spend over 10 years on booze, tobacco, and meat, and compare that to the cost of any monitor.

Unfortunately if you want an ultra wide (imo it is the PERFECT aspect ratio for desk/computer productivity) you're stuck with lower pixel density panels like

34" 3440 x1440
or
38" 3840x1600

That's what kept me from moving on from my 3x 27". Until the Dell U4021. It offers the right amount of real estate for me, and through some research I have most figured out increasing sizes of things like web browsers that need to be larger, without taking away the 5k2k improvements for video, Lightroom, etc.

if you're truly crazy you can get the super weird 49" ones.
IIRC only 1080 vertical pixels? Or even 1440? I wasn't going to drop a bunch of $ and not get an improvement on the monitors I already had.

The Dell U3421WE charges the MBP via USB-C. You can probably find a 38" variant of it.
