go here, www.ameritrade.com and open a roth IRA and put it in. im investing everything I make this summer, so i can buy a nice mac with some of it in august after wwdc, thats when ill be needing a new machine

Buying a computer is about the worst investment on earth. They have worse depreciation than nearly everything. You could almost do better by buying bags of ice and leaving them outside. (Almost.)

invest in oil. it will only do one thing this summer. go up. and up. and up. then when a new mac is announced that sounds cool, sell all the oil. then whatever money you have left over, you can donate here to the Lance Armstrong Foundation LiveStrong Challenge. I'll be biking 60 miles in october and I havent really started raising money yet. but by the time you sell the oil i will have raised more money and you will be able to help out!

or, if you are just looking for a computer now, then get an intel mac mini core duo ($800) + 20" cinema display ($800) + wireless keyboard and mouse ($100) then youll have about $2000 with taxes. . . or if you dont have taxes add some ram and or an external hard drive.

if you want portable go for the MacBook Pro ($2000) or wait for the MacBook which should be announced soon and cheaper. I wouldn't really go for a PowerPC based portable right now.

and oh yeah, you might want to be a little more specific so we can help more!!!! enjoy your $2000 responsibly!

be more aggressive with your money... go to ariel mutual funds and invest in their ariel fund. 1000 minimum buy in, invests in small to mid caps

Sounds like a good plan, TBH if you don't need a new computer now i'd wait until January next year. (i know everyone says don't play the waiting game but...) as

a) Apple will have finished the intel transition and most applications will be Universal
b) Leopard and iLife 07 will be out saving a bit of cash on that upgrade. Also OS X will be better optimised for Intel then so will be a lot quicker (probably but based on how Tiger was a *lot* quicker on an iMac G5 than Panther)
c) Vista will be out so you will be able to see how good it really is (well maybe not, if it's delayed again.) if it's no good, things aren't looking up for Windows.

And don't forget the Blu-Ray drive builtin or even HD-DVD (if Vista is working just fine on mac)...

I hate these posts about what to do with money...I've got a whole list of things I'd like to if I had an extra 2k laying around. I'm sure you do, too. What someone really needs to do is make a thread on how to make a quick $2000...without involving illegal activities.

Don't count on bluray included for a while.

Sony just announced their first computer with bluray. Ready for the price?

Five. Thousand. Dollars.

So your Uni has a Sh*t library just like mine then? I hate having to buy books but its the only way, (especially if you do Maths)...

I say, put it into an ING Direct savins account. If you like, I'll send you an invitation, and they'll give you $25 for just opening the account with them. They have an awesome 4% savings rate that beats every bank I know of, and they have absolutely no fees at all. Me, my girlfriend, and my mom all have one. They're great!

Otherwise, just save it. Wait for more Universal applications to come out, and wait for the Merom MacBook Pro's. They'll be so much faster (20%!!!!), and a lot of the bugs in the original MacBook Pro should have been worked out by then. I'd say you'll only have to wait until the end of this year for one, and by then, your $2000 will have grown quite a bit.

IF you decide on investment, put it into a segregated fund portfolio. Traditionally you'll get 10-12% per annum. These are creditor protected (in Canada at least) and are meant for long term (5-10y). Other wise, if you can leverage some REAL equity ~50k you can put it into another type of fund I've heard of that gets annuals fo around 30-40% through offshore investment (this is how banks make big $$$).
but again look at my previous post on how to blow it with style:)
edit: generally seg. funds can be had with guaranteed returns as well in the range of 8%
