Just spoke to Parallels and they have confirmed that they do not support M1 Pro & Max - just M. "Currently Parallels is supported only on Mac with Intel and M1 chips."
Interesting. Wonder if that means something is being bottle necked and we might see better performance for the M1 Pro/Max?

I’m running it on a base 14” MBP and Geekbench shows performance on par with an HP Envy ( x360 Convertible 15-ds1xxx AMD Ryzen 5 4500U 2375 MHz (6 cores)) just like my 2018 MBP. I only run Visio and PowerBI and my experience is they work fine. I have the version limited to 4 cores and 8GB so the pro version may be faster if you have the cores and memory.

It works just fine on my MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro. Perhaps they aren't fully using all the new GPU power yet.

Same here. Not sure what their comment means other than they have not optimized it for the new chips.

Can’t you just install a x86 version or Parralels with Rosetta 2 and then run Windows x86 that way?

Does anybody know anything about something called VirtualBox? It sounds like it runs basic Windows, but then again I don’t have a Mac (?? …yet…) to try it to test it.

No. x86 Windows won’t run on an M1 Mac. Rosetta doesn’t support virtualization. Windows Arm does it’s own emulation for x86 apps.

So who does better x86 emulation - Windows ARM or macOS Rosettta 2? I think the latter (because Apple added some stuff in Apple Silicon for better x86 emulation which Windows ARM doesn't know about?) which is why games perform better in CrossOver than in Parallels (also, CrossOver doesn't include the entire Windows environment so there's less cycles being used on non-game stuff).

Definitely Rosetta 2. WoA only does just in time translation, Rosetta uses part hardware and sometimes only needs to translate the app the first time.

I am running Windows 11 in Parallels without a problem on my 14" MBP M1 Max with 64 GB ram. I can even run Quickbooks 2021and the performance is excellent.

IMHO, a cheap windows PC may be the least hassle way of playing games and potentially gives you a better experience.

I just wish iMacs had display input so I could hook up a PC and use the 5K display. I do game occasionally on my 2019 iMac with i9 and Vega 48, and Im interested in the M1 iMac Pro coming next year, but I don’t want to lose the ability to game. I also don’t want to have to put another huge monitor on my desk, that wouldn’t be centered, to be able to hook up a gaming PC.

Buy an HDMI dummy plug for the PC and set Steam to auto-start with Windows, then you can stream from the iMac in Steam. If you network the devices directly over ethernet, the latency would be almost nothing, lower than or equal to the normal input device and display latencies that come with every computer.

Oh, I sort of remember reading about that a few years ago, but had forgotten about it. I’ll have to look into the pros and cons of that.

I guess the annoying part would be having to still have an additional display to be able to set up, configure, update, and install games on the PC.

It runs but has no GPU support for M1P - lots of games throw up an error for the GPU. This is something parallels needs to fix. It runs because M1 pro has a lot in common with M1 - but Parallels will still need to be updated to fully support it.

Yup. I also have a maxed out 14"- while everything runs just fine, it is obvious that some things need fixing. Tried running Diablo 2 Resurrected and got an error message.

What version/editon of QuickBooks (QB) are you running? I've been looking for a Canadian, desktop, version of QB Premier, (ARM) flavour, to run on my (ordered & coming) MBP M1 Max, but Intuit (which makes/markets this product) is just incredibly rude and horrible to even answer my questions about their QB products. They dodge questions about whether it runs under Parallels on a Mac. For years I have hated every time I have dealt with them but I cannot yet find a comparable competitor.

QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus 2021 for Windows running on the latest ARM version of Windows.

I'm running my M1PM with Win 11 ARM.

It is running my own very very old Windows software without issues. And most other x86/x64 Windows programs without any issues.

I have issues with ONE piece of software installing the Microsoft VC++ Redistributable - if the "installer" builder is too old it does not know Microsoft "Auto Installs" the correct VC++ package. So even if you download and try to install the X64 version - Windows will override and install the ARM64 version. The problem is the installer only checks for the X64 version via Windows Registry entries causing installation to quit as it never shows the X64 version installed. (Installer built with Advanced Installer 15.5 - I guess from before MS cleaned up the Redistributable installers)

But that is the only issue I have found so far in normal "office" use. I'm not a gamer so have not tried any gaming related installs.

Install Steam for Mac. If it sees the Steam Deck powered on and running, the games just automagically show up on the Mac client to stream.
Does this require internet bandwidth ? Will it eat data usage ?

I've seen some folks mention CrossOver - and while I don't expect this experience will apply to every possible situation - I thought I'd chime in to add that of the few old/simple/indie Windows games I've been playing around with, all seem to run better inside the Windows VM hosted by Parallels. Running them via CrossOver manages to get the CPU up to 80°C. Whereas the Parallels VM of Win 11 keeps the system under 60°C.

Just another FYI. I think for now letting Windows 11 handle the x86 emulation (for Windows only apps) is the best bet. This is of course an evolving situation so can't say how long this will be accurate.

No, it's all hosted over your local network. There's an app called Rainway that works similarly to SteamLink. I use Rainway to stream some of my PC games to my Apple TV and play them like I'm on Console. Works really well. The less you rely on WiFi though, the better. For the suggestion to use a Steam Deck and stream via Steam Link, that'll work best if the Steam Deck (or whatever PC is being streamed) is connected directly to your router via ethernet. I have my AppleTV and PC both wired into my network and I can't percieve any lag at all - it's like the games are running directly on the AppleTV.

Doesn't that just mean that Parallels VM is not running as fast as it could be?

This video is informative:

And there's a gaming database that shows Native, Rosetta 2, iOS/iPadOS, CrossOver, Parallels compatibility.

I saw a benchmark video and their determination was that the best way to run Windows games is via WINE. You don't have the overhead of the operating system that way.

That said, my opinion is that you should just have an x86 Windows system to run games on and do everything else on your Apple Silicon system.

But the Windows system can do everything Mac can do (but not vice versa). So why not just get the Windows machine for gaming and use it for everything else?
