Again, it baffles me how these indie developers can keep their app so lean and mean (small file size; lesser than 30 MB), no bloatware-like features included and have quick turnaround times to critical bug fixes that affect user experience.

On the other hand, the apps from Facebook and Google have grown tremendously in size (from below 100 MB to above 300 MB) over the years, even when they claimed features have been stripped off or the app streamlined (e.g. Facebook chat streamlined into Messenger & main app, Google Drive streamlined into Sheets, Documents, etc).

And there are so many critical bugs but none seems to be prioritized for fixing.
What are they doing? SMH.

Tracking and advertising software takes up a lot of space. ;)

Protube is working again with the new updates. The admin has fixed some issues and said that they were caused by Google's unwillingness to fix bugs reported a long time ago. He implemented some workarounds for the app to continue working.

ProTube: Picture in picture, beautiful interface, lean and fast application, no ads, streams audio-only if wanted, supports offline playlists without needing a YouTube account. It's perfect.

There are only 2 issues with it:

1. Sometimes comments are not loaded. The developer explained this on twitter some time ago. This is because the app uses a single API token shared among all users, and YouTube/Google allows that token to do a certain number of API calls per hour (such as "get video" or "get comments"). When the app is actively used by lots of people, it'll dynamically restrict frivolous API calls such as "get comments". If they didn't do that, they would hit the YouTube API limits for their app token and it wouldn't even load videos or search results. So comments may sometimes need to be limited when the app is heavily used by lots of people at once. But it's very, veeeery rare that I don't see any comments...

2. Sometimes it bugs out and plays 2 videos simultaneously (you'll hear the audio of the first video) if you try opening a new video while it's just about to switch into Picture in Picture. It happens maybe twice a week. If you search for something, tap a video to start playing it, then tap the username under that video to go to their channel, it sometimes keeps playing the video invisibly even though it has navigated away from it. But when it happens I just force-quit ProTube via the iOS app switcher and start it again. I think this bug will get fixed.

Those two small niggles (it's an indie app) aside, it's very fast and efficient and beautiful and has made my YouTube experience much more enjoyable. Kind of like having the YouTube RED features for free.

Bonus tip: Use Apple's Clock app to set a countdown timer and set its action to "Stop Playing" (instead of a sound signal). This means you get a sleep timer in ProTube.
