Depending on which one you use the most or which one sees the most resource intensive work being done on it.

Phone for me since it comes everywhere with me.
I don't really like tablets since it's too big for portability like a phone, and it doesn't do as much as my laptop, and I'd rather type on a physical keyboard.

And for the phone side, I'd want enough speed for it to not crawl. Thing is it's not just the phone's fault. It's that the network is horrible some places still. I'd rather have the phone and apps be reliable. I swear everytime we go out of our usual area, Maps freak out. Never at home/work, in case of a detour.

What do you do on your tablet?
Work: About 8 hours a day of Zoom calls, drawing on a whiteboard for my students.
Personal: Addicted to Civ 6, which seems to be pretty computing-resource intensive.
Also, basically everything else— browsing, email, whatever. I have a Mac Mini, which i do use together with the IPad during work hours only. But the IPad is really the one device i can’t do without.

Good. I love my iPad Mini 6 as well.

Faster iPad of course.

You can't split screen or have multiple instances of Safari open on iPhone. You're far more likely to multitask and load sites in desktop view. There's a good reason why Apple put M1/8GB even on $599 iPad Air.

Faster iPad, just look at how much RAM is in the iPads currently compared to the iPhone. I feel like the majority maybe need to bounce around 2-3 apps at a given time for like copying, pasting, browsing, whatever else lol. Tablets though are supposed to be more of that powerhouse multitasking device that also has to push out that data to a much larger screen.

Depends how you're using your devices really. I prefer to keep my phone updated every year or 2, where as the rest of my tech is usually 3+ years for their life cycles. My phone sees the most usage though so I like having that the most up to date tech.

Whichever you use the most, should be your most up to date tech if thats all you can afford to update at once.

This year upgraded all my devices including my appleTV, except my MacBook Pro which is only 2 years old and cost the most to upgrade.

Faster phone, easily. I have no patience for slow phones. When I'm out and about and want to look up something I want it instantly.

My iPad Pro is 4 years old. The most intensive thing I do on it is Affinity Photo. And it does it fast enough.
I do all my actual work on my Mac.

If iPadOS was actually as powerful as macOS, then my answer would be totally different.

Why would apple do that when a MacBook Pro costs so much more?

iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard costs more than an M1 MacBook Air.
And iPad margins are better.
People buy and replace iPads more often than Macs.
Apple sells more software on the iPad App Store.
The size of market of people willing to buy $2,000+ computers is tiny.

There's lots of reasons.

MacBook Air is not a high end MacBook Pro. MacBook Air is like a iPad Air.

Why do people keep comparing the MacBook Air to the iPad Pro. They are not in the same class as the iPad Pro has superior hardware.

The iPad Pro is more comparable to the 14" and 16" MBP in terms of hardware (mini-LED 120 hz display, great speakers, and so on ...).

The MacBook Air equivalent would be the M1 iPad Air.

If you had to make a decision
Faster phone. My phone is a constant multitasking machine, with chats, calls, notifications, background syncing, etc. A fast and responsive system is a must as I continually go back and forth on those apps.

Once I use my tablet, it's more of single/dual office tasks, maybe with a concurrent zoom at the most. Even the Snapdragon 750 on my Galaxy Tab S7FE seem to handle those things just fine. I can imagine an A12X would be more than sufficient (bearing having enough RAM as well).

Tablet for me, as I tend to use it more throughout the day, and the tasks tend to be more intensive. Until last year, I was rocking an iPhone 8+ and 2018 iPad Pro and felt performance on my 8+ was still fine.

I don't do any heavy lifting on either my phone or personal iPad (just bought a mini - woooo!) but I'm a big fan of everything feeling 'instantaneous' and smooth. Since I use my phone more than anything else, I think that's where my emphasis would be if having to make a financial decision.

My work iPad *does* need to be fast, but I don't have any control over the purchasing decisions or replacement timeline, unfortunately. We're due for a much needed upgrade soon!

People can find all the reasons they want, the truth is that most iPad pro owners also own a Macbook and Apple will always gain more from selling both than selling just one (and when you spend $1500 on an iPad + MK you can spend at least as much on a MacBook)

For me however fast the phone is, I find myself going for my iPad or MacBook to get something serious done mostly due to the big screen. The heaviest load I put my phone through is some games, and I mostly play games in my mobile not on iPad. So I always get a midrange android which gets most of the stuff done and more. personally I don't find any use in getting the greatest and latest phone since a good midrange android gets most stuff done easily. They are pretty good these days.
