Did you back up your phone recently, if you did restore it from back up. It will put back you passwords and junk.

the restore should work, but if you do want to change, i have been using eWallet and am VERY happy with it. they do not have a desktop syncability for Mac yet, ut they do have for windows - and your data DOES get saved in the backup, so you are never LOST.

its EASY and fun to use, and i have been using it for about a week now and am VERY happy. I have refered to it a BUNCH of times, and it is REALLY easy to use.

no, not using the desktop version...just the iphone app.

i was at work and noticed an update was available, so i d/l'ed it. next thing i know...all data has been wiped.

i've spent some time off/on today re-entering what i could. i really like splash, but i hope they fix this issue for any future updates.

For those that updated and kept data, did you update on the phone or on the computer? It might be that since the update process on the phone is a clean install the data is lost, but not on the computer.

that is very interesting...I'd like to know as well. Maybe it'd be best for everyone to update via itunes on their apps rather than OTA via the iphone.

however, i've noticed that on my games, if i update OTA, the saved data is still there.

I updated via the phone late last night and had no difficulty. All data were intact. Same when I updated from the first release to the second.

For those who use it, the desktop version for iPhone has also been updated, and it's important to keep the versions parallel between the phone and the desktop.

I wanted this app instead of one of the others because it has a desktop companion, which so far at least is missing from the others on iTunes. I expect desktop apps will come for some of them. Migration of my data from an earlier Palm desktop application also went easily.

YMMV, I guess.

I used to use SplashID on my Treo and sync to the Mac Desktop App. But after getting my iphone last year I had to move to iPassword. I didn't think I really needed the automated web page login feature but it is actually nice to have all my new logins saved automatically. The latest 1Password is really slick. They replaced the annoying dialog box with a widget that is integrated with the browser (at least Safari). And the syncing between iphone and Mac works as well as could be expected without being tied into the itunes sync.

I updated last night and everything went fine and it looks like others did as well.

I'm sure there are glitches but to slam an app and post it to a popular forum over one incident is irresponsible.

I lost everything going from 4.0 (original) to 4.02. So I can only assume that going to the latest (which is what, 4.04?) will wipe out my prior data as well.

I like the interface of SplashID and the fact that it uses 256bit blowfish (which as far I as know has not been cracked and unlike AES is free of government backdoors...yes I'm more paranoid than I have to be).

Update: updating to 4.04 with the phone itself worked fine. I assume that my problem before was from having the iTunes overwrite the version I had already updated on the phone, as the updating process in iTunes is known to be wonky (people getting false reports of 100s of updates available, etc...).

stop crying. it wasn't an "alarmist" post. it was me trying to warn people before updating. i just posted what happened and gave people an idea of what could happen.

sure some won't lose data.......but some may.

Well, as I read your original post, it was a blanket condemnation, not just a warning about what you experienced so others might practice caution. "...it'll erase all your saved data/passwords" is pretty categorical.

He updated an application that wiped out sensitive data. Not wanting others to suffer the same fate, he came onto MR and posted a beware of update thread. Sure, he didn't know that it might have been an isolated case, but I'd much prefer someone do what he did than say nothing because they don't know if it's widespread.

He could have

a) Mentioned it like he did. This probably prevented a few people from upgrading for a few hours. If it was a widespread problem, it would have saved people from spending hours re-inputting all of their data.

b) Not mentioned it. If it turned out to be a problem, many people would have downloaded the update and wiped all their data because he didn't make a thread. Since it isn't a problem, there was no harm done.


The situation, as I read it, was not anything near an alarmist/irresponsible post. It was cautionary, and I thank the OP for posting it. Sure, I didn't update my SplashID for a couple hours, but the potential cost greatly outweighed the benefit of an update a couple hours earlier...

-woke up and went to work
-at work; clicked app button on iphone
-splashID showed 1 update
-updated over-the-air
-relaunched splashID and noticed ALL data was wiped
-still at work.....following me......?
-posted to MR about the issue i experienced, thus warning everyone who planned to update
-got home later that evening and used my backup to reload data

I updated and took it through its paces. It works just fine. My only gripe with the program is that it doesn't play nice with long passwords or names. It gets truncated in normal view. The only way to see the whole thing is to go into edit mode, being careful not to erase it or modify it by accident. The developers are very responsive in every way, but seems to be ignoring this issue.

If I intended to issue a caution about updating of the kind you said you intended, I might have said something like this instead:

I just updated SplashID over the air and when it completed the installation, I found that all of my data had vanished. I have a backup at home, which I hope will restore the data, but in the meantime I thought it would be helpful to let others know about my experience so they will know in advance to be careful when or if they update.

It will be a real drag if I find that I have to reenter everything again by hand. If that happens, I'll be looking for a different password manager.

To me at least that sounds more like what you said you intended. Your original post sounded to me like a blanket statement that updating would delete your data. As we see from the rest of the thread, that hasn't been everyone's experience.

I know I said I'd go back to lurking. But it really does matter how you say what you say, if you want to convey your intention accurately. I'm done now.

Splash ID did not work (sync) for me so now I'm looking at eWallet. I need the sync feature so I'll keep watching for it.
