don't just rant, get help. the upgrade (am assuming you mean 11.1?) isn't a fiasco for everyone.

give us details, ask for help. or run the combo updater, reset nvram. work it out, and you'll be much better off...

You aRe Right about the Rant. Just this is such a shock to have this many issues. I have been a long time Apple useR and neveR had to woRRy about these things. I have neveR played aRound with nvRam, so not suRe what it will accomplish. I am Running 15" MBpRo, and I am thinking that this might be last update foR my tRusty machine.

the laptop is late 2013 with the I7 and 16gb memoRy, and has neveR caused any issues. Spills, none, actually have keyboaRd coveR just in case. TRied the nvRam and SMC and no joy.
11.1 did not change things eitheR.
InteResting, I have neveR spent any time undeR the hood of any Macs unlike the Windows machines I have had.

not sure apple has (yet) posted a combo updater for 11.1. you could try rebooting into safe mode; you could reboot into recovery, reinstall the OS, or first... run first aid. (backup before you do anything, just in case).

your having these issues is nothing personal, apple has not taken a huge fall... rather, something has happened. hard to troubleshoot from a distance, yet... that's what this community excels at (along with, sigh, ranting & raving).

good luck!

Just tRied tRying diffeRent language keyboaRd and no change. FiguRes that I have a loweR case R in a lot of my passwoRds, that I cannot access now :D The Rest of the issues will get soRted oveR time but the passwoRds aRe going to be inteResting to deal with.

FiRst aid did not help. Ran a couple of times just in case. Had not thought of tRying Safe Mode. I did tRy KaRabineR and I was able to move the R to anotheR key and I did manage to get a loweRcase R. So I do know that the R is hiding in theRe, somewheRe. Will tRy Safe Mode.

FRiends and family aRe enjoying themselves watching this

ok. if it persists, i'd back everything up, boot into recovery, and reinstall 11.1. anyway, good luck with it.

Try to see if you get the same problem with an external keyboard, USB or Bluetooth.
If the problem goes away you have a "mechanical/electric" problem with the keyboard.

Yup. That was why it neveR occuRRed to to me that it could be the keyboaRd. I am still tRying to undeRstand how that would woRk anyway. Last time I changed keys they aRe a mechanical device and the computeR does the CAPS switching. Just Really scRatching my head heRe. WondeRing if clean Reinstall is the answeR.

if it's the keyboard (ie you're SURE another keyboard doesn't have the problem with YOUR mac), then... it's the keyboard. solved! in which case, a reinstall wouldn't matter...

Using an old Imac keyboard and everything is perfect. Do not understand it but it is what it is, I suppose.

We tried to tell you it was the keyboard when I asked if you had ever spilled anything on it. That kind of problem is almost always hardware related. (Perhaps coincidental with the installation of Big Sur.) Anyway, glad you're on the right track now. :)

Even though it's likely something close to the keyboard, I'd not rule out software/driver issues.

Why ?
To get a capital R, the keyboard hardware is sending both the "shift" and the "r" scancodes separately, There's no capital "R" nor a lowercase "r" scancode: it's just keys and modifiers like shift that are sent separately as you press & release them.

What I'd try:
- boot from external media / recovery partition and get to the terminal there
- boot into single user mode or at least safemode and see if the "r" is coming through normally there.
See if it goes away or not.

I've worked at a place where as a gag some had rewritten a device driver to swap the "g" and the "h" keys and isntalled it on a colleague's workstation. Took him a while to fix that one and a lot of cursing.
