The problem I have with USB 3.1 Gen2 devices is that they dead end the TB3 chain. I dearly wish these were just TB3 devices with 2 ports! Anyone see any single or dual SSD drive cases with two TB3 ports?

Just buy a LaCie d2 TB3 ($399) or G-Tech TB3 ($349) and replace the HDD with a SATA III SSD.

Prediction:
Thunderbolt 3 isn't going to become any more popular in the computing world (in general) and in the Mac world (in particular) than was thunderbolt 2 before it.

Which is to say… "not so much".

USB rules the roost.
It will continue to do so.
Even more now that the base speed has been doubled with USB3.1 Gen 2.

TB3 is already incredibly more popular than TB2 ever was. Even mid grade generic PCs are shipping with TB3 now, meanwhile even high end PC's did not come with TB2. Thanks mostly due to the common connector (USB-C).

And now even peripherals that utilize TB are able to make that step we've all been waiting for (especially with Apples implementation connecting directly to the CPU to minimize overhead, good on them btw). Very high res displays and eGPU's are most notable and will push TB into the mainstream.

USB will always rule the roost merely due to the amount of devices that don't need TB3 tech. However in the not so distant future those devices will more than likely be plugged into a USB C thunderbolt port that carries the USB standard of the time.

Eh TB on PCs is a lot more than the connector type. The two biggest reasons why TB2 never was wildly adopted on PC:

1. Required highly specialized drivers that were difficult to develop for each motherboard and device
2. High royalties and fees for TB2

Thunderbolt 3 features more plug-and-play on the PC side so specialized drivers aren't required and Intel stopped charging royalties. These are the 2 major reasons why TB3 is taking off on PC.

Very good points. However my point is that it IS taking off. Honestly the reasons don't matter.
