It has got to be ProMotion. I can just see Apple announcing the next gen Pro Models next year and using the “Pro” buzzword that they just seem to be throwing around all over the lineup these days and introducing a ProMotion display on next year’s Pro lineup. It’s a shame because they should have introduced it on the iPhone 12 Pro this year but they chose not to. Perhaps they couldn’t get the display suppliers to supply enough displays on time due to the pandemic? Perhaps. But perhaps they did it on purpose to have another significant “Pro” feature to add to next year’s iPhone Pro lineup to make additional sales

I believe there’s a previous article mentioning that Apple had to pick ProMotion or 5G, and they went with 5G instead. And looks like there’s an incentive from Verizon as well (almost a quarter of the keynote was advertisement for Verizon), and Apple get subsidies from Verizon (and AT&T) by $30. Add on the fact that Apple had to use Qualcomm modem (Qualcomm probably charge them a pretty penny), I guess this is why there are a lot of things being sacrificed this year, including nickel and diming consumers for mere EarPods and power adaptors.

This sucks for many markets where there’s no 5G and no subsidies. We end up paying a ton more for iPhones but get no useful features in return.

Yep, would've loved Promotion, as I love it on my iPad Pro, but already resigned myself to it not making it this year. Coming from my iPhone X, I’m still getting the 12 Pro, but I’m not quite as thrilled about it as I would have been. Also wish the Pro and Pro Max had same camera features...

Me, too. My suspicion for why they did this after the 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max were virtually identical? Well, this time around the smaller Pro was 6.1", which turns out to be kind of an excellent size for a phone. Many people think that, as has been evidenced by a ton of posts after today's event. A lot of Plus / Max users wouldn't mind going down to 6.1" and saving $100, whereas in prior years they wouldn't go down to 5.8" since it was too small. Apple doesn't want you to save $100, so they reintroduced functionality discrepancies to ensure the Max users don't go anywhere, and their ASP remains enormous.

ProMotion and smaller notch looks like coming in 2023 Apple will use this year’s throwback design for 3 years but that’s okay just because you or I were expecting a little more or won’t be upgrading, Apple will still break sale records with this phone.

It’s not about breaking sales or not, They will make millions of sales and they will continue milking this iPhone 12 “Pro” that lacks a ProMotion display for as long as they can and will then introduce a “Pro” iPhone with an actual ProMotion display sometime next year that would warrant the term “Pro” as opposed to just being another iPhone with a better camera and faster processor.

Don’t get me wrong, the iPhone 12 Pro is going to be an excellent device, the issue is that the lack of ProMotion display is truly disappointing to say the least.

If Google is able to do OLED 90Hz and mmWave 5G for $699, I don’t see why Apple had to pick between the two.
To give Apple credit, Google had to use a much cheaper non-flagship SoC to achieve that. And also less premium materials and tech (no radar/FaceID). Still, they at least include a charger.

$94AUD for a MagSafe charger and 20w brick, nice one Apple.
It's for the environment man...

I think that will backfire and a lot of Pro Max users will go regular 6.1”
Actually, I am surprised Apple didn't increase the Pro prices.
Apple is really pushing their Pro brand to be less and less attractive for the common user, especially for the bang for the buck. Could be a well strategy to focus people on models that can be manufactured easier/cheaper (and thus can be outsourced to other countries like India).

The small iPhone 12 Pro didn’t even get all the top features of the improved Camera system that the 12 Max got.

At best, I think it's a wash. Apple doesn't need to pay for an expensive Qualcomm SoC. They also have bargaining power and economies of scale given A14 is used in everything from iPad to MacBook. The Pixel 5 doesn't have Face ID, but Google also put in 8GB of LPDDR4x and a 6" display.

I find it odd that "they had to choose 5G or 120Hz" when Android OEMs have both and are cheaper. Apple also could have made the battery larger? If only they had the money to solve the problem. Oh wait, it just wasn't enough of a priority.

Apple had to use Qualcomm. Intel was not on track for 5G, and mediatek probably is not capable to make things in volume as big as Apple. That's why Apple buckled in their lawsuits against Qualcomm and made a deal instead. They knew they didn't have much choice, at least until they can make their own modem.

We also see the trend of SD865 phones increasing in prices or using less materials (Note 20's plastic comes to mind). Qualcomm is really applying its power. There's literally no competition in the 5G modem.

Many of those Android OEMs sacrificed their margins to achieve those spec list.
We all know Apple is not that type of company. I mean just look how they find the need to even remove earpods and chargers on the iPhone SE. Apple really wants to maintain/improve their margins, but 5G probably is costing them big money.

I think its the pricing of the non-Pro 6.1" with 64GB base storage AND the fact the mini and max preorder + ship in November. At least Pro's are 128GB now ,that's fine but...

$850 for a 128GB 12 is close enough to $999 128GB 12 Pro, its hard to not be tipped in favor of the $1k phone but then that non-pro Blue is really nice

I agree with that thought. In the past, there was bit of deliberation when the 6.1" was $699 or $749. Now that the gap is only $150, it doesn't make much sense to go with the base model for anyone who needs 128GB.

And unless you know with 100% certainty that you're going to get a new iPhone next year, the extra $50 seems a no brainer to not sweat anything
