It is not like that is hard information to get. I have read it numerous times in analyst's stock reports. How accurate is it? Who knows? Seldom do they provide the statistical model being used. When they do, it is difficult for the layman to discern whether it is biased, or all inclusive.

its a quite important #, so called "update users", since most ppl get their OS along with the new computer they buy (only exceptions are Linux, which almost completely rely on NON-bundled sell, or distribution).

But

New version of Windows almost never have a good record of rapid adoption by "update users", from win 98, xp, to today's Vista, its more meaningful to check that # 1 years after the release.
