Exactly, the only way Microsoft is going to make a good tablet that can compete is to make it different than an iPad.

I think the Tabletness of Windows 8 can really go far. Right now, iOS strikes me as being pretty far behind.

Apple is in catch up mode right now, but iOS6 looks like they've been closing the gap pretty quickly. And they NEED to.

Considering Apple is making 99% of tablet industry profits, Microsoft is the one who needs to close the gap quickly.

Apple is a HUGE threat to Microsoft because of the iPad. Every iPad sale is a cheap laptop/netbook that doesn't sell with a copy of Windows on it. the iPad is a direct heat-seeking missile at Microsoft's core business.

Well, from what I read on that, Apple still doesn't make 99% of the tablet market profit. Not even close.

Apple is NOT a huge Threat to Microsoft. Why is that? Well its pretty simple.

People still want desktops and Laptops, because tablets like the iPad are VERY limited in what they can do.

Tablets are not full fledged desktops or laptops, at all. People will still want them.

The Core of microsofts OS business is power users, the enterprise market. and the casual home users.

As of now, Apple has been unable to enter the enterprise Market, the corporate market, the R&D market, and the business user market. And that makes up a TON of the market.

People still want Windows Desktops and laptops because of how easy to use and productive they are.

The fact of the matter is, a tablet CANNOT replace a full on laptop or Desktop, Tablets are VERY limited in what they can do.

90% of current desktop owners probably could get buy with a tablet/hybrid with wireless keyboard/mouse/trackpad solution. They don't have external hard drives, printers, scanners, etc... Apple is really stupid not to make a tablet hybrid.

Why wouldn't they? They still profit from it.

In order for Microsoft to make $1 billion on Windows RT license fees per quarter, they would need to sell about 12 million tablets which is what Apple is currently doing. Not gonna happen, not even close!

Um. No.

Don't get me wrong, thats a cool idea. But we need to take the business/serious user into this. At the moment, something like an high end android/windows/iPad tablet doesn't have the same muscle that a desktop PC has. And even for basic task's, you would really be surprised how fast you can use up system resources.

Desktops are better for so many users for a couple of reasons.

Performance Per Dollar: Desktops win this one big time, even expensive Apple desktops will perform very well for what you pay for them. That muscle goes a long way in pretty much every market.

Reliability: Desktops have the advantage of having large cases, big cooling fans. Nice big hardware that runs super cool, and lasts a long time. I would be willing to bet money that tablets have a FAR higher failure rate than even a generic 500 dollar PC tower.

Compatibly: A Desktop/Laptop running Windows, Linux, Unix or OSX litterally has 30 years of programs to look back upon, and run if the need ever be, tablets can't do this.

A Hybrid tablet is a really cool idea. And I think we could go in that direction at some point, but I think even Apple realizes we are NOT at that point yet.

We stand at the point where a tablet just is NOT as good as a desktop/laptop. Those machines are VERY productive. And until something better comes along they are here to stay.

Apple is NOT a stupid company, Neither is Microsoft for that matter. Both of these companies know what they are doing. Tablets just are not at the point where they can be as productive as a desktop/laptop. Or as powerful, or as compatible. Though Microsofts Tablet might change that , along with Intels amazing mobile CPUs.

Would I love a tablet sized device that I could carry with me to home and work, place in a dock and have it perform amazing? Yes I would. but right now, we are just NOT at that point.

My current workstation weighs a solid 85 pounds, until a tablet can do the tasks it can do, I could never use ONLY a tablet.

It's hard to say. People once said the XBOX brand would go nowhere.

Now look at it, its the king of the consoles.

And I also gotta say, Tablets are a GREAT idea. But until they become as fast, reliable, and upgradeable as a desktop. They'll never replace it.

Let me ask you a question.

How do you know?

Cross platform is overrated. Having a fully integrated ecosystem that "just works" like Apple's is where it's all at now. The ability to use AirPlay and Mirroring from your iPad to an Apple TV is magical.

So magical that :apple:TV is still waiting for a complete revamp in hopes of becoming relevant. SmartGlass will offer the same functionality regardless of which mobile OS you are using and there are a whole hell of a lot more 360's out there than :apple:TVs. Hell, at the rate TVs are turning into basically HTPCs in a few years all this type of functionality might be built right into every TV. DLNA is already a common thing in mid to high range HDTV sets but I don't think it's trickled down to budget sets yet.

Uh no. SmartGlass is not the equivalent of AirPlay w/Mirroring. Completely different tech and from what I've seen inferior.

From the SmartGlass teasing we got at E3 we know that it can be used for video streaming between devices, a home theater style remote, a contextual, interactive 2nd screen for media you are watching via your 360, an interactive 2nd screen for gaming to be used in conjunction w/a controller or a game controller all by itself. It's also a platform as opposed to just a app so 3rd parties will be able to develop their own uses for it instead of waiting on MS to update it with features, and it will work with iOS, Android and Windows 8.

How does this sound like completely different and inferior tech?

A Microsoft tablet will be able to take advantage of all of the work that has gone into Windows 8, which has been more or less built from the ground up to work on tablets. The two aren't really comparable.

Can Microsoft build one of these without it being prohibitively expensive? If they built an iPad priced device, wouldn't they undercut the OEMs?

This conference is so Apple-like I can't even focus on whatever it is they're stumbling to announce.

It has a kickstand and a cover that turns into a keyboard!

Microsoft knows where this is at - this is a convertible tablet, and that's what Windows 8 is really made for.

Nice input options:

- "Pen input. Digital Ink."

- Touch cover is the name of the thin keyboard. But now there's a bit thicker one, called Type Cover. Has a trackpad.

I am rarely excited by Microsoft stuff, but if done right this is really nice for students, school or meetings of all kind.

Thick as a brick. Lots of holes. Stylus. Kickstand? LOL?

This doesn't look like competition for the iPad.

"Full Desktop PC."

So is it both PC and tablet? So it's like an ASUS Transformer?

It's a slate :)

It's like an iPad, but it can use a stylus - not a pen that pretends to be your finger, but a real stylus with precission touch - has a core i7, and a keyboard built into the cover.
