Today, Apple announced updates to their MacBook Pro line of laptops. The updates include an HDCP compliant (required for Blu-ray playback) nVidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics card and an optional 1080p display for the 17" model. Both of these additions to the product line strongly hint that a Blu-ray drive announcement is forthcoming, possibly as early as next week during Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

Early this year, FastMac produced Blu-ray drives as direct replacements for many Apple products, proving that it can easily be done, though at a cost. Apple, who is a member of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), will have to respond to this third party upgrade or risk losing business to aftermarket vendors. Signs point to that response coming very soon.

Now this gives me another reason to wait for a couple of weeks b4 I make my big purchase. :)
 
Now that would suck for all those who are buying the MBP today.
Why would they do that though? I mean give it a couple of months and I get it, but to release another mbp with specs that people seem to want just moments after the 1st seems a little less apple-ish and a lot more dell-ish.
 
I'm sure that if they were going to announce something like that, they would have held the update back until next Monday's keynote. Maybe we'll see Blu-Ray as an option in the Mac Pro from next week, but I think the MBP spec is now finalised for the next few months.

Yes, of course. Apple doesn't actively seek to piss off customers. They would not have shipped the current MBPs and then update them in a week...
 
Blu-Ray makes no sense because the mbp models have no HDMI connector (and hdcp is not possible without hdmi). Furthermore only the 17" model (optinal) has the full HD resolution. Why should i watch high resolution movies with 1440x900?

Last I checked 720P is HD rez as well. You wouldn't need HDMI if you restrict HD movie watching to the LCD. And HDCP has been possible with DVI since it inception.

Wrong - DVI supports HDCP as well. However, we have no indication that the MBP supports HDCP.

I think this is fairly ridiculous, though. First, how big is the market of people willing to drop $1000 on a BluRay drive to watch movies?

Second, I don't think Apple is willing to take the risk that they will produce a bunch of notebooks that will be obsolete (if they ship them with BluRay drives and HD-DVD wins, or vice-versa).

700 dollars, and Apple is on the BluRay association/board. They have a vested interest in BluRay succeeding. Shoot Sony is betting it's whole existance (practically) on BlueRay and it seems Hollywood is backing them.

Sure, the Sony VAIO FZ Series (specifically the 180 and 190) have Blu-Ray options and both start at or under 2 grand (on the 190 for the same price -$40 less- as the high end 15.4" MBP you get better specs in a few areas- high-res display, Blu-Ray Writer - except for the GPU which is an 8400m ). But then, you don't get OS X, which is the dealbreaker.
 
IF this were true we would have seen an upgrade to the Mac Pro BTO options yesterday as well as an BTO option on the MBP.

They could've released it yesterday, when the option of BluRay drive was added would simply add 2 weeks to delivery times.

I don't think we will see this in the MBP until September or October with Leopard.

Nope, parts are still to expensive and they wouldn't announce this any earlier than October otherwise to many buyers would be pissed off. As for the reasons you have given.....you ever thought that its merely a hint that you could connect an external blu-ray drive to the MBP and it would work great? :rolleyes:

The addition of this gpu or the HD screen does not hint towards BR drives anytime soon...
 
I'm just going to get a 700$ acer and survive with that until the next upgrade. It would be a shame to spend my entire life savings on a MBP and have it completely redesigned 5 months later. I have a feeling they are going to redo the case (at least fix some of the imperfections), and blue-ray hopefully. I personally want to see a slick black super pimpin MBP with silver engraving.:D
I reccomend the same to everyone else....its good to have a crappy machine that you are not afraid to abuse the **** out of. (save 120$ on leapard 2).
(if you can talk me out of this, please do, because i want a MBP really bad!!):eek:

Blu Ray is around a $450 upgrade on Dell's XPS M1710. That's too much IMO.

Depending on the price, I'd be interested, but I don't think I'd pay more than a couple hundred. Presumably we'll be able to buy an external Blu Ray drive for that in a few years, and use it to watch movies on a current Macbook Pro.

At least I hope Apple will provide the software to do that...

You realize you can burn with that drive as well right? $450 is a steal considering there aren't any external or internal (just checked NewEgg) drives for that price available.
 
when blue rays for mbps are realeased, why not just pop out the old drive and stick a blueray in??
