Oh, and let me point out that DVD Studio Pro 4 already supports creating HD-DVDs, but not Blu-ray discs.

yes, and it works quite well too, ive used it for two projects cant get much on a regular DVD (but all i was doing was half an hour of HDV home movies) the quality is excellent

Apple is going to support HD-DVD and Blu-ray. They won't choose, it's not smart for their business model. They target creative professionals such as film studios, etc. who want to be able to distrubute on which ever medium they choose. I believe Apple isn't going to offer internal drives until they have a decently affordable Blu-ray/HD-DVD combo drive (which should be fairly soon).

hi there friend!

hmm.it sound higly unlikely with the combodrive..i know that Lg has one(and the rewievs are not the best since it support hd 90% compare to blueray 100%).
The combodrive in a computer/mac would be very pricey(much more pricey then just one of them..think about it?i guess a combodrive will arrive 2011(??).With the curent pricing. And remember blueray and hd has a strategy regarding compenents in pc/mac(someone mentioned hitachi, pioneer as the provider of compenents to apple and both are pro-blueray). And i dont think they will agree on putting a comboplayer in so soon(theres a war going on)
Just look at the fact you can buy readymades dell,hp,alienware, sony with blueray but not hd.(Thats funny when you think about microsoft as the big contributor in the pc market)
It's more logic to see ao on either blueray or hd(hd=unlikely). And if you want both you can allways buy external;)
And its higly unlikely to see apple with hd player ore a comboplayer considering the facts..
It's more likely with blueray player..(why do you think the big pc companies has chosen blueray?it must be for a reason...
(if i dont reply it means that i'm done)
;)

I say just pony up 400$ for a 40gb PS3 and buy your discs from a cheap online site like dvdpacific.com or deepdiscountdvd.com

The 400$ alone is worth being free from the cancer that is windows. The PS3 is the best HD player ever made of any format and playing movies on a standalone is such a blissfully hasslefree experience that it would be nuts to try and play movies through a computer and put up with all of the potential hardware and software problems.

And the PS3 plays the newest games too, as an owner I tottaly recommend one.

That's precisely why Apple is going to wait until prices drop before committing to either format...

theres a war going on

And it must end some day, don't you think? True, Pioneer, Matsushita, and Hitachi are all sided with Blu-Ray, but that doesn't mean Blu-Ray is the clear winner. After all, Warner Bros. Supported both formats, and even came up with the idea of a combo DVD format, but later on gave up, and chose HD-DVD...

Microsoft is a software company. The do not choose which format the manufacturer is going to support (Aside from the Xbox 360, of course)

Uhm...what facts again ?

It's more likely with blueray player..(why do you think the big pc companies has chosen blueray?it must be for a reason...
No company has signed a contract (aside from Sony, i guess xD) to stay 'loyal' to either format. Companies are all about the money, and if HD-DVD surfaces the winner, HP, Dell, Alienware (owned by Dell, which means, it 'doesn't' count as a separate manufacturer), etc, will all go for HD-DVD.

Thank you.

On a side note, who came up with the name "Blu-Ray"?! It's the stupidest name ever. What's a "Blu" ray again? Do you mean "Blue"? What benefit does a "Blu" ray gives me? As a consumer, I prefer a name that explicitly tells me what the whole format is about, than a "super cool" name that describes nothing, but the inability of a big ass company to spell. Also, if Blu-Ray fans cannot spell the actual name of the format, how am I supposed to know? Oh my pet peeves, THIS is why I love Apple so much. Stick to frigging simple names. "Glossy" is a descriptive name, "XBRITE", "TRUEBRIGHT", "TRUBRITE", "XBRIGHT", etc are not.

Thanks HD-DVD for sticking to a name that actually implies it's a High-Definition Digital Video Disk.

The name Blu-ray comes from it using a blue laser to read the discs (HD-DVD does too). I do agree with you however.

machatch: It's not going to take until 2011 to get a combo drive that's the right price. Maybe to get a combo hd/blu/dvd/cd standard in a Macbook, but Apple will most likely start offering one some time next year. Professionals who actually need to be able to author both formats aren't going to mind a $699 option to add the combo drive. Hell, the RAID card is $999. That's nothing to a pro/company.
