I don’t think the dot projector is used for anything other than authentication.

This implies that the dot projector is what makes the selfie camera a “True Depth” camera.

Apple also describes the dot projector as being an important feature of the True Depth camera, and what allows things like the new Snapchat filters to look so real. It makes sense that the data could be used for more accurate depth of field transitions as well.

Nope, it's also used for Portrait Mode photos as well
[doublepost=1510646604][/doublepost]Portrait Mode should still be considered in Beta Mode. It's fantastic, but sometimes it causes some humorous results. Especially using the stage B&W lighting....looks like a kid photoshopped your picture onto a black background.

It's fun and works the majority of the time, but I can sense quite a few improvements coming in a later 11.XXX update.

Brilliant shots.

Thank you.

Here are a few more. All of these show that you don’t need to use portrait mode to get bokah. :)

All photos taken with a 7 Plus and made raw.

just the standard 2x camera?

I want to play with the portrait mode some more to understand what apps can do with the depth data (even if the default camera doesn't get the edge detection quite right). Does it provide full resolution 1x and 2x images along with extrapolated depth information?

I use both lenses. Just depends. The last 3 photos, the middle on was taken using the wide lens and the 3rd photo using the normal (tele as some call it) lens.
I almost always make photos in raw (all the ones I posted are) using a 3rd party app. Sometimes I’ll take a couple of quick snaps using the native camera app.
