Hope OP finds a resolution. I don't mean to gloat, but this ( 14 base ) has been my first Apple product in a while whereby I haven't felt the need to replace it due to QC or panel related issues. Everything appears to be on point and meeting my "OCD" expectations, little disappointed actually -Joking :p:D

Same issue for me, 16-inch MBP 2021, I am considering returning it because I have the eye strain that I haven't ever experienced sitting in front of a desk for hours and hours.
I haven't used OLED devices before, either mobile or laptop, and from what I have read the only issue can be PWL being ON all the time on all brightness settings. I am not an expert on displays but that is the only difference I can find implemented in these new 'Mini LED' screens.
I feel so disappointed because the display, colors all look really awesome, and the machine is great but there is a portion of us users experiencing this.

Did he say what the new technologies that might affect this are?
Basically said anything after 2015 I’m going to struggle as refresh rates, backlight Pwm and now mini led.

he said it isn’t my fault I did not foresee these problems even he struggles, mostly black text on white backgrounds make his eyes strain on newer displays.

hence why Apple finally implemented dark mode, I expect Apple tried to quite the sensitive few.

he said he uses a privacy filter on his new machine and users external monitors bigger to help with his issue.

it’s not something I’m willing to give into, I shouldn’t have to add stuff to a machine that no other has cause me problems before!

he said my best option would be to take the to an Apple store with both the 2021 and 2012 and hammer it out down there, they may take pity on me and refund me.

he said I could then try and use the 14 days return to demo other machines.

I said the text was hazy compared to my 2012? He said turning off font smoothing might help he, but low and behold Apple removed it from big sur.

honestly feel stuck at what to do at the moment..

I don't know what the problem is, but those ideas about it don't seem promising, as refresh rates didn't change until 2021, and PWM is too high in frequency to be a likely cause. I wonder what he has in mind about mini-LED, though.

If you want to mess around with font smoothing, I think this method is still available:

I did notice that this effect was less for me when using a matte finish HP z series monitor vs the built in display. So maybe there is something to the privacy filter angle since these kind of put a matte finish on things?

This was a life-changer and better than doing it in the terminal.

Why does Apple ship with a blurry, low-contrast (compared to bold) font?

Ok the font smoothing has helped a lot. There are two other settings that have got me somewhat comfortable, but I still think it's a downgrade to the old "retina displays" if your not watching HDR content! The settings that helped me are:
- font smoothing (i used terminal but app above looks good)
- Disable "Wallpaper Tinting" under 'Preferences' -> 'General' -> 'Allow Wallpaper Tinting'
- Enable "reduce transparancy under 'Preferences' -> 'Display' -. 'Reduce transparancy'
Those settings combined seem to have give me a "sharp" ish screen

I’ve just checked aliexpress for a replacement screen for Macbook Pro M1 14 2021 A2442 and found out that there are two manufactures: LG and Sharp. May be one of this manufactures had or still has issues with display itself or just coating that makes displays unsharp and blurry. I have a problem macbook for like 6 months now and still cant adapt to it, so thinking about to sell it or even try to remove anti-glare coating :)
