Twelve South begins shipping BookArc for Air, giving the thin MacBook Air a full-size desktop home

Charleston, SC, February 22, 2011 -- Twelve South is pleased to announce BookArc for MacBook Air is now shipping. Designed exclusively for Apple® MacBook Air (Late 2010 models), the latest BookArc firmly grips the thin MacBook Air and includes built-in cable management to keep desktop and power cables in place. When BookArc is paired with a MacBook Air and external monitor, it offers a noticeable boost in power for graphics-intensive programs. BookArc for MacBook Air is available immediately for $39.99. More info and a high res image gallery can be found at twelvesouth.com.

Like previous versions of BookArc, the MacBook Air model is fashioned from heavy gauge steel for stylish looks and a sturdy footprint. One convenient addition is built-in cable management. Since MacBook Air has inputs on both sides, the BookArc cable housing routes power, external display, USB and other cables behind the MacBook for a clean workspace. These cables stay tethered to the stand so you can easily get your Mac in and out quicker than ever.

For those who use MacBook Air with an external display, a key benefit for BookArc is the performance boost it gives your Mac. If you connect MacBook Air to an external monitor and leave the MacBook open, video memory is split between the two displays. When working with MacBook Air in the closed position, resting in BookArc, 100% of the video memory is dedicated to powering the external monitor. This provides a notable boost in power when working with Aperture, Photoshop and other graphics- intensive programs.

The arc-shaped stand elevates MacBook for a less cluttered workspace. A soft silicone insert firmly grips the second generation, 11 and 13-inch MacBook Air. Padded rubber feet keep the stand from leaving any marks on your work surface.

Twelve South BookArc for MacBook Air FAQ

Why would I use my MacBook Air in a BookArc?

MacBook Air not only makes an outstanding portable laptop computer, it is also powerful enough to be your full-time "desktop" machine at your office too. When you're at your desk there's no need to be confined to the small dimensions of the portable screen, keyboard and trackpad. Park the MacBook Air in a BookArc, connect a full size monitor, extended keyboard and favorite mouse — and you have a much more comfortable "desktop" Mac to work on. BookArc gives you back acres of valuable desk space while it holds your new 'desktop friendly' MacBook vertically off the desk.

There’s another benefit of using your MacBook Air closed in a BookArc vs. using it open alongside an external monitor. It actually speeds up your MacBook Air! Dedicating 100% of your MacBook Air’s video memory to the external monitor increases redraw time in everything from iPhoto to Photoshop.

Why would I want cable management for my MacBook Air?

The new MacBook Air benefits greatly from cable management because, unlike all other current MacBooks, there are important connections on both sides of the Air. Power is on one side, while the External Monitor port is on the other. Desktop connections will be very messy and cluttered unless they are neatly gathered and hidden away -- which is exactly what the cable management on the BookArc for MacBook Air does.

BookArc Cable Management also keeps desktop connections handy and available when returning your MacBook Air to your desk from the road. It’s like having a docking station waiting for your MacBook Air to return. BookArc Cable Management may seem like a small thing, but it will quickly become your favorite feature after enjoying its convenience and tidiness for a few days.

Can I use my 1st Gen MacBook Air with BookArc for MacBook Air?

No. BookArc for MacBook Air was made to fit the Late 2010 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Air models only. However, you can use the original BookArc for MacBook with the original 1st Gen MacBook Air. An insert (#3) was made just for that model. To summarize, if you've got a new MacBook Air -- the new BookArc for MacBook Air is for you. Older 1st Gen MacBook Airs can stick with the original larger BookArc. The original BookArc is also the solution for all MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

well jeez, mine works fine in my older Book Arc, it didn't complain at all :D

Funny how the FAQ says explicitly that the newer MBA won't work with the older BookArc... better to spend another $39 and throw the old one in the landfill than have your new MBA wobble a bit :p

They were suppose to make an silicone insert for the regular book arc for the macbook air. They were going to provide a free one to people who already own one. I guess that did not pan out.

I was going to purchase one, until the shipping was going to be $47 to the UK and probably tax after that!

I think I will wait until they have them in the UK Apple Store. The stand will look great with my 13" Ultimate MBA and my 27" Cinema Display :D

Forgive me if I am wrong, but isn't it kind of against the forum rules to advertise here? This isn't a market place.

As unimaginative as they are, I don't think copy-n-paste jobs are considered advertising... unless of course you're accusing the OP of being a shill.

They do have an insert for the ORIGINAL Air available on request for the original Book Arc ... I have one that they sent me some time ago. Although the new 2010 Airs do, of course, fit in it, it is slightly loose and the Air tilts to one side.

That is possibly no problem for some, but the whole Book Arc is pretty large since it is designed for all the MacBook Pro models including the 15" and 17" models. The new Book Arc looks to be downsized to look better with the 11" and 13" MacBook Airs only.

I ordered the Bookarc about a year ago for my macbook. Loved it. It came with 3 inserts. And now I just got the new MBA 13", with the speck cover it's a perfect fit with the smallest insert. No need for me to update.

If you do order one you may have issues if you put a case on it.

Okay, so this is pretty new to me. Basically it’s a device for resting your Air, instead of sitting it on the table? Is that it? I’m not sure I quite get it.

While I've always liked this stand aesthetically, it just seems to me that the actual laptop should be placed in it the other way around, with the vents facing up.

You know, heat rising the way its been known to do...

Wonder if someone who has one will try both ways and compare temps and report back??

OK ... it's a stand for the Air, to get it out of the way when you are using it at your desk with a external large monitor, keyboard, and mouse. You could stand it up behind the monitor ... out of the way ... less susceptible to damage ... simply unplug and go when you want to take it somewhere.

You are wrong. But I forgive you.

Who is advertising? I don't work for Twelve South. There has been a lot of discussion about this stand so i posted it was available now. Not like I make money off every one they sell. I guess i better remove the pictures of the case i bought in the case thread in case someone thinks I am advertising..

Received my new BookArc Air today and it is very nice. Everything downsized from the original to match the diminutive Air in scale. It holds the air gently but firmly in a perfect upright position. The Air easily lifts out by slightly tilting it forward as you lift it up. Very well done!

I prefer mine level on the table and open, not stood up like some cheapo scanner.

this product being advertised here seems like a numb-nuts unnecessary add-on to me

Oh thank god! I was sitting at home tonight, and it just hit me.. "I wonder what halledise thinks of the new bookarc stand". Now i know, thank you!

Well ... when I am sitting on the recliner watching TV, I don't like having a computer in my lap since I need a laptop-support under it to raise it high enough to easily see the screen. That all gets heavy, and is a lot to move when I want to get up.

So I have a small monitor on the end table and this stand allows my Air to stand up out of the way behind the monitor, which leaves room on the end table for my beer!

I use the light weight bluetooth keyboard/trackpad with the MagicWand for typing, and it easily sits on edge on the floor against the end table when not in use.

Thus ... no numb-nuts!:p

I would prefer the option of using the macbook on a stand. If this arc was $20 I would buy one as an alternative.
