Boot Camp update for nMP

It seem's the nMP is not listed by the update :

"Note: If you are using one of the Macs listed below, you should download Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5621 instead

Oh oh.. you are right...the lists aren't the same. Maybe the same error in the installer can explain why it can install bootcamp on the nMP:confused:

The nMP uses the BCA (Boot Camp Assistant) that is built in. Looks like Windows 8 is supported.

Windows 8 is (and always has been) supported for the nMP. It's 8.1 that's not supported. The question is, if I use BCA today to download the Boot Camp drivers, are they any different than what's been released previously?

Apple didn't officially support Windows 8.1 with the initial Boot Camp release for nMP. It's unclear whether that's changed, although it does appear that using BCA to download the newest Windows support files and installing them does introduce changes. I'm not sure exactly what they are, but when I now right-click the Boot Camp icon in the Windows system tray and select "About Boot Camp," the version is now reported as 5.1 whereas before it was 5.0.

I had no issues installing 8.1 on my nMP. It was (primarily due to flash) my fastest Windows install ever. I kind of assumed that Bootcamp Assistant automatically downloaded the latest drivers when creating the Windows installation support flash drive.

When I later tried the manual Bootcamp update, just to be safe, it also said my version wasn't supported.
 
I am able to run Windows 7 which I migrated from my Mac Mini running under Paralells on my nMP. I simply took the Samsung SSD out of the Mac Mini, put it in a Sonnet expansion chassis on a Tempo SSD Pro card upgraded the OS on the SSD and it seem to work.

Sure, Boot Camp Assistant would've downloaded the drivers that were most current at the time you created the Windows installation support flash drive. Since I installed Windows on my nMP about three weeks ago, the drivers I had originally downloaded are now not the most current version.

It stands to reason that if other new Boot Camp versions were released today, then the nMP drivers that you download when you use BCA were also updated today.

Evidently the manual Boot Camp update doesn't work for the nMP (I tried it too). The only way you're going to get the latest Boot Camp version for the nMP is to download the drivers using BCA.
 
Hmm, since 8.1 is not officially supported, what happen if you install 8 but then later Windows Update to 8.1? Will bootcamp still work or they'll be errors?
 
8.1 is supported with this new package. This update brought back the media keys to full functionality.
 
Maybe you should use 5640 instead?

I downloaded the drivers thru BCA, and it downloaded 5640 (not 5621) for my nMP.

I did a double take to make sure but definitely was 5640.

UPDATE: tried to manually install 5621 on top and getting same error - not for this machine configuration.

No, and but like you said, for a new Windows install, BCA will download them automatically.

I'm not a 100% sure how the drivers get updated on the Windows side of Bootcamp (so once you've got Windows installed). I thought it went through Apple's updater rather than the generic Windows Update. But I might be wrong.

BCA puts them on a USB stick and you need to install them manually in Windows.

PCs used to be like that, but with floppies instead of USB thumb drives.

Apple should leave the 1980's behind ;) .

My HP systems can automatically download the latest stuff from the net, upgrade net/disk/video whatever drivers, upgrade BIOS and RAID/disk/net/video/whatever firmware.

Most of them are updated live without a reboot. Network/RAID/video drivers never need a reboot. If something (like the BIOS) is updated, there's a message that "Some updates won't take effect until the system is restarted, so please restart when convenient".

Lenovo and Dell's system update utilities are similar.

Of course, Apple really doesn't want to make Windows run as well as it can.

I vaguely remember Windows driver updates happening automatically in the past through Apple's Software update utility, when using Bootcamp on my iMac. But I didn't use it much due to the hassle of switching OS's on a non-SSD equipped machine, so I'm probably wrong.
 
There's a lot of confusion and mis-information here so let's simplify

The only time OSX/Apple touches windows drivers is during the initial install, boot camp assistant, windows support software, etc - complicating matters is Apple did relase an updated boot camp package a few days ago, but this is now also downloaded thru boot camp assistant for clean installs or via the web if you need to manually update an older package

After windows is installed, it runs just like windows on a PC namely all updates, drivers, etc come via windows update. Contrary to aidenshaw you can in fact setup windows update to automatically update your machine.
