Hello, have same G5 like you - G5 Quad with Nvidia 6600 256MB, same BS is happening with Phenix like ubuntu - the screen goes black after the Linux bootstrap boots up - Video card is fine and I tested it. It has to be with the settings of the nvidia card.

Just to be clear here folks, I am not the guy in the video. That's Mr. Casey Cullen, lead developer of the Fienix Linux distribution. I'm someone else (namely, head of The foxPEP Project. :))

@Macbookprodude If you've already tried both DVI ports on the back of your 6600, then I don't know what to tell you besides that fact that you must have one strange 6600. Maybe sell off yours and buy another from eBay?

I'm sorry for digging up an old topic but since the question is even older.

I'm reinstalling an old mac pro 2005 of which I don't know the exact model.
I created a key with leopard, I manage to launch the key via openfimware.

but now i have this error. I am waiting for burn a dvd because macpro accept only certain.dvd speed. I haven't looked there yet.
Currently disassembling to find out which mac pro processor I have exactly. I have not found an effective way to know exactly which model I have.

If someone know about the error I will try to put more memory ram.

The OpenFirmware picture reveals you have a PowerMac11,2 which is a Late 2005 Power Mac G5, available with one 2.0, one 2.3 or two 2.5 GHz dual-core PowerPC 970MP CPUs. There's a sticker on the back of the case that tells you which CPU(s) it has; the sticker also lists the machine's serial number which can be decoded to tell you which model you have.

I have one G5 that refuses to boot from USB, and that's the 7,3. Every other AGP machine, and my DC G5, finds and boots from USB just fine, but not that one. It also hates Linux for some odd reason, no matter what video card, RAM, or storage I put into it. A quirky beast...

I wonder if your Xserve is based on the same hardware as my 7,3...?
I have your Mac G5 7,3's twin brother!!! I am trying to boot Fienix 5.1 from a USB drive. I even found a you tube video with excellent instructions from the Fienix dude himself, Casey Cullen. He demonstrated it on a G5. I have re-flashed two 8GB USB drives with the Fienix .iso, one using the "dd" Terminal option and the other using Etcher on a iMac G5 ( I know, not the same). I'm guessing the BootX option mentioned in another post wouldn't work for a Linux distro.

@z970 @swamprock Any suggestions? (please don't say give up :))

I always think that's good practice to show as many references that you use to properly demonstrate your research and flaws.

The only video of Casey on his channel (I didn't search that much more than would be necessary) boot commands on G5's show one of the many ways that PPC can boot USB devices, that was asked on this forum more times that I can remember (and I'm not by far the most ancient/experienced user on this forum). And I'm not sure that's the video that you mentioned.

You have to be aware that was already mentioned several times in this forum about some users reporting USB flash drives that have some quirks/incompatibilities with PPC Mac's. (I only have some "ancient" USB 2.0 flash drives that worked on all my machines)

But once AGAIN the OpenFirmware thread has some answers!

If I'm not mistaken the "BootX" it's a command to OSX startup, and one of many guides to boot was already made on this forum by @DistroHopper39B that was very well done in my opinion. Another was made by @q66_ on the VoidPPC docs about G5 machines and if everything fails you have the more manual method on the same docs.

And again, more information it's welcome to properly help you
