Plugged in my mini-SAS breakout cable and routed to the optical bay:

Now have 4 SATA cables in the ODD area running 3x 2.5" and 1 ODD BD-RE drive. (I might have to also run the other 2 SATA cables back up there from the ESB2 ODD_SATA ports to run more 2.5" drives)

Here is the mini-SAS extension cable run across the chassis before moving it around a bit to get the chassis fan module back in place.

Wait, so you have SATA3 cables to where the optical drives live, is that right? I thought you some how connected the 4 SATA port/sleds area to a SATA3 card by what you said. I thought you meant getting the 4 regular bays upgraded, but still very cool.
 
Nope... The 4 SATA cables going to the optical area are the SATA-2 speed cables from the stock controller. Using a mini-SAS to 4 SATA breakout cable to run into the optical area.
The 4 regular sleds are indeed running at SATA 3 speeds and is where my 840 evo is connected. It's in sled 3. I used a sas extension cable to connect to my PCIe raid card to the cable that goes to feed the 4 bays.
Basically I configured it like Apple did for the Mac pros that came with the apple raid card.

The red cable running up is from the stock controller. The shielded cable that runs across the top is connected to the raid card and the stock 4 bay backplane.

Oh wow, that's super cool. Nice! I wouldn't have guessed that the connector cables that are stock at the sleds would work at SATA3 speeds. Clever!
 
I've never turned it off ....
When an OS update happens it overwrites the modified trim enabled kext. After reboot from the update trim enabler tells you it's not active anymore. You tell it to reapply it and reboot and it's all done.

Same here, never have any issue.
 
Just an update. This has been running 24/7 with no issues (knock wood). Been a great update. Can't wait till 2TB msata drives come out and can up this to an 8TB SSD.

I think the issues are related to a PRAM reset. If you need to do a reset and have unsigned kexts (TRIM enabled) you will just see that gray warning sign that will force you to jump through a couple of hoops to get back to normal.

That's not 100% true, if the boot argument is modified, a pure PRAM reset may not cause any problem, but just no guarantee.
