The superdrive is required. It's only 6% the cost of the machine. It should be a moot point. Buy it. Steve needs a burger for lunch.

Actually any USB CD rom or DVD will work. I have an old one that boots just fine on my MBA. No need to spend $100.

I had the same idea to find one from another manufacturer to save some cash since it will almost never be used, but I was actually unable to find one for under 100 bucks.... I am just astonished that Apple has the sleekest, prettiest solution at the best price.

Unfortunately not any drive will work.

I had a LG ES50L (usb powered) it did not boot Windows.

Now I have a Samsung (external power) that works fine.

only external powered works. Usb powered drives don't work apparently.

Well the LG-ES50L usb powered works for 90%.

Burning and reading discs from OS-X and Windows, booting OS-X for install all work.

Except for booting Windows for install that does not work.
