If you're struggling to fill it up, then just leave it empty. NAND flash works better when there's plenty of free space anyway.

The Mini 4 has a laminated display while the 2017 iPad 9.7 does not. I expect the extra cost of that display is why Apple only offers the Mini 4 in 128GB capacity to partly justify the price premium over the 2017 iPad. Out of warranty replacement cost for the Mini 4 is actually higher than the 2017 iPad.

Im embarrassed to ask but what is a laminated display and how is it better?

IOS 11 was slowing down my Mini 2 too much. Actually the slowdown started after I upgraded from IOS 9 to IOS 10 and it was annoying me too much. I hope I did not buy the new model right before they release the iPad Mini 5 but I doubt it. Anyone have this model and do you like it? How well does it run IOS 11? Mine is upgrading to IOS 11 as I type. One annoying thing about the 4 is that its only sold in 1 size. I would have taken the 32GB model but its only sold in 128GB. I have lived with 16GB for 4 years with the 2, how will I fill up 128GB's?

Love my Mini4 & no longer use my larger iPad3. IOS11 not a problem.

Is that why the Mini 4 is so much brighter and clearer than my Mini 2?
Partly. Apple used a lower color gamut display on the Mini 2 vs Air 1 to begin with (probably for cost savings) so that makes the improvement even more noticeable than the one from Air 1 to Air 2.

From Apple's press release:

The improved Retina display features a fully-laminated design that brings images and content closer to the user’s fingertips, resulting in an even more personal and intimate experience. A custom-designed anti-reflective coating reduces glare by 56 percent for a clearer display in the office, the classroom or outdoors.

Partly. IIRC, the 2 had a regular display. The 4 introduced a retina display to the Mini, and a very good one at that.
Original mini was 1024x768. Mini 2 was already retina display but had lower brightness and color gamut compared to Air 1, iirc.

Its a shame that Apple does not see it this way.

It's a shame Apple doesn't see a lot of things the way I do.

It's a big part of the difference.

The Mini is really a niche device. I love the size for reading, but I agree that it's probably only a small percentage of Mini owners that use it for that. I would wager that the majority of Mini owners are kids that use it for games and early-school stuff.

I would agree too that it's primarily used by kids. My use-case is very niche; I use an iPad to write with outside the house but I prefer I find the mini is more conveniently sized and better to read with. In portrait it's like reading a paperback and its the highest density display Apple ships in an iPad - the only one in fact about the 300 DPI printing standard.

I just purchased an iPad mini 4 LTE model for use as a display screen for my DJI Mavic Pro’s wireless controller. I have a 2017 iPad Pro 12.9” LTE that I use daily as I love the larger size. But guess what, I’m currently typing this post using the mini 4. The mini feels great in hand and is a quality iPad. Seems to do fairly well with iOS 11 - I’m pretty impressed.

Enjoy your new purchase.

Yeah, all the adults use their non-niche 5-6 inch phones for the really serious things.:D

It's so sad that Apple will slowly discontinue the iPad Mini Series just like the Airs. Most likely iOS 12 Might be the Last update for iPad Mini 4 thanks to it's 2GB Ram, but the problem is it's still equipped with an OLD A8 Processor the worst is iPad has to pushed more pixels and will use it Ram just to ran the retina display. iPad 3 with A5X did not get iOS 10 even it has 1GB Ram just like iPhone 5/5S.

In the end you can enjoy your iPad Mini 4 without any problems until the fall of 2019 before iOS 13 will drop A8/A8X Device at a time.

Oh I may not even upgrade to IOS 12 as I saw what IOS 11 did to my old iPad Mini 2.
