There's a website that sells these custom backs in different colors, so I bought one and completely dismantled my iPhone and put it back together with the green back.

And before any of you waste your breath, I don't care about the warrantee. ;)

It came out really nice. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get the metal bezel to fit right in the new case, but after some very slight bending and dabbing of some industrial glue, the whole thing sealed together beautifully.

Hey pretty cool looking. What is the URL for the site you got it at?

I would have posted it but I didn't want people to think I was spamming.

I believe it's called ecaseshop.

I will warn you though; they don't give full instructions. I took pictures of every step I took during disassembly so I knew how things went back together.

This project is NOT for beginners.

I was wondering about that part... there are some anodized aluminum covers for the original iPhone on eBay that I periodically lust over... But likewise, they don't look like they really just involve popping the casing off and putting a new one on.

P.S. It's fine to post a link -- the issue is when you're affiliated with the company in some way, or worse yet, pretend that you aren't but clearly are. Also it's not like you just registered an account today to post about these cases.

I'm not sure about the original iPhone, but I can tell you, on the 3G, replacing the back cover involves removing every single component.

The vibrator, the volume controls, the silent switch, the headphone jack... countless millimeter sized screws... it's a pretty big project. Everything inside is attached to tiny screw holes on the plastic cover... so naturally, it all has to come out.

All in all, it took me about and hour and a half to completely disassemble and reassemble my iPhone with the new cover.

Colorware does something very similiar for you for a pretty hefty price correct?

Great job! Im not a huge fan of neon green, but impressive DIYS.

that is the ugliest back i have ever seen on a phone. great way to blind people though. you just made the iphone look cheap

I'm guessing so. They have a pretty intense painting process and the results are awesome looking. I'm pretty sure at least one member here got their iPhone done (although I think it was a first gen).

Do they keep all the original information on the back of the phone? Ive always wondered.

It looks pretty good in person. I've received nothing but compliments. But I guess it's not for everybody.

And I'm sorry if I upset you by tainting the iPhone's expensive look. :D

EDIT: For the record, I'd normally care about my warrantee. But I dropped my iPHone and replaced the screen myself because it only cost me 40 bucks... so it was void anyways.

My back case was pretty beat up, so I decided to replace that as well. That's how this all came about.
