The SSD is here (it was the Macworld SSD temp sensor that I was waiting for, you would not believe the price of this lead delivered to the UK, with P&P, customs tax, UK post office charges!!!) - It's just that I daren't put it in!!

So are you saying that you think I can install the new SSD, boot with CMD + R and the iMac will start doing its thing?
that s how we reboot our macs.
watch that video tubemans posted *7, that should be detailed how to reinstall your drive.

Normally, yes, hopefully you have fast internet.

Look at these install videos first.

Look for your specific model if needed, also search on Youtube.

Thanks so much! Yes, internet is fast.

Remember this is replacing my one and only hard drive, it is not in addition.

Based on a new, unformatted SSD which of the 4 options should I chose after CMD + R?

The SSD has all gone OK, many thanks for the assistance. Just uploading the latest OS now.

Please keep fingers crossed for me! :)

So all went well, the iMac downloaded Lion, then El Captain and finally High Sierra; all very time consuming but it went OK.

iMac seems pretty quick and responsive but...…………………………..

It now seems that I have the graphics card problem (common to the mid 2011) because it's locked up a few times and given the flashing screen before shutting down. I don't remember it ever doing it before, whether it's coincidence or whether I had disturbed something when I had it apart I don't know.

I really can't justify pumping more money into this, now obsolete machine.

Gutted is not the word!

I'm sorry to say that I'm back off to Windows 10, it's really very good!

Many thanks for your help though, Guys and sticking with me!

As far as the Mouse and Keyboard are concerned if you can live without the gestures provided by the Magic Mouse and Trackpad the a conventional Mouse and Keyboard are more than ample.

Er….….Looks like I'm going to have to live without the entire iMac as well!

My iMac Mid 2011 (pile of scrap) in the corner is really bugging me considering how much time, money and effort went into it before it went pop!

Someone mentioned that I should I have gone for a late 2013 as these are very reliable. Would anyone here disagree? I have fairly limited funds but is the general opinion that this is a good machine?

Assuming that the late 2013 is the one to go for (and very open to suggestions please!)

My 2011 (pile of scrap) has an i7 3.4 Ghz processor and I note that most of the 2013s are i5 3.2 Ghz. Am I going to notice much difference?
