Helluva deal.

Having said that, it does make one wonder...finding a Mac Pro that is still relevant hardware wise, with those apps installed....just how legit is it....anyone who would peddle one of those would surely have it marked up a tad higher.

I swear that computer must be filled with illegal substances they needed to get rid of immediately.

Congrats but it sounds to me like you are now handling stolen goods. $10... no one on their right mind would sell a computer for that price, especially a mac.... The big apple logo on the side would be a give away surely these sellers are not that stupid...!

But who in their right mind would go through the trouble of stealing a huge honking MP and then sell it off for $10. That doesn't make any sense...

More to the point who would go and steal a huge honking MP in the first place. Its not exactly easy to steal at what like 50lbs. I say it was $10 because it has upgraded CPUs so it probably has some stability issues, given its insides are not original.

I've been using it for the past day with no issue, seems pretty stable...addressing the "did i buy stolen goods"?...story is..the owner of the MP passed away a couple months ago, left house and all its contents to his brother, the brother came from florida (i'm in california) and was selling all the contents of the house, and is now in the process of selling the house...

SO....I've decided to keep the MP. Seems stable and of course I got a ridiculous deal. I know that its probably more computer than what I need, but, if I wanted to upgrade it, what options do i have?

Well it has already had the CPU upgrade, so you really don't have many options there (Clovertown is I believe the newest Xeon that will fit in that system, and youve already got its core count doubled from 4 to 8), so its basically RAM, HDDs, Drives, and possibly an ATI Radeon HD5770 graphics upgrade before your at the end of the line pretty much for that system.

with the ATI Radeon HD5770 upgrade, and considering what is in the system now, you think I'll be able to properly run PC games through BOOTCAMP? I imagine it would not work through parallels...

Yes, you will. Though with games it's usually more about CPU frequency than count of CPUs.
BTW: I think the fastest CPUs you can pop in are X5365 (3GHz quad-core). Those can be found on eBay from time to time for reasonable prices.

Remember you have the option to run a lot of DOS, Amiga and Windows games via WineSkin, the Wine wrapper for OSX. Paul The Tall's website lists a huge number of games that he has got working this way... http://www.paulthetall.com/index.html

Download the wrapper for the game, install the game off the original media and you are good to go.

Wow, and I was doing the happy dance about buying a 09 2.66 quad (8 gigs of ram, 2 TB of storage and GT 120 card) yesterday for $1300!

this deal is very good. with the efi hack and a w3670 or w3680 cou. you have a 6 core hex for under 2k that is a very nice deal. to be honest if I got the 10 dollars deal the op got I would list it on ebay for 1200 and use the money for a 2010 refurb like this one

Would you mind terribly telling me about this efi hack?

EDIT: nevermind, I remembered this thing called 'google'. So, it would allow me to install a six core westmere server chip in lieu of my 4 core nhalem?

if you have a 2009 mac pro you can do it with the efi upgrade. if you have a 2010 I wrote a long thread on this site on how to

I stumbled onto that. Newegg shows a bunch of different choices...I'm presuming the 130W 3.2ghz (ie, cheapest six core) one would work. How much of a difference would there be between that and the 2.66 nahalem?

And I'm thinking that if I go that route, I'd have my friendly 3rd party apple authorized repair center do it for me. I'm getting old, and my eyes are half shot.

Also read up on how crazy easy it is to install a SSD in the open optical drive and/or a e sata drive as well. Dang twice!

That sounds extremely fishy. I wouldn't be surprised if it was stolen... :S

But congrats on the deal. It's probably worth x100 of what you paid for.

We know tales of individuals getting prosperous from a knickknack they purchased at a garage sale that ended up being a lost masterpiece by Michelangelo. Those types of finds are as uncommon as the Hope diamond, but often real deals could be discovered for little forgotten treasures. Some healthy spending cash can be made, if one is educated and knows what to watch for, in selling yard sale treasures. They say that if you have dedication to what you are doing, you will end up a wealthy person. Some who are starting a garage sale needs to be well organized, not only that you are selling those goods but also showing your customer that how creative you are. Putting a garage sale is not an easy business, you need to be more focus and love what you are doing to be satisfied. How to spot treasures at garage sales.
