Yeah, you can take my post as being rude if you want, but why would you have to ask a random audience on a tech forum if you ‘should have to return your phone‘. I didn’t even read the whole opening post, but if you’re unhappy with it, then move on to something else If it’s causing such effort for you to ‘need convincing‘. This isn’t really a difficult matter.

No idea what you're talking about. I have custom ringtones for many of my contacts. I can even edit custom ones right on my phone and export them from garage band. A little research goes a long way. If you want to return the phone based on sheer ignorance, go right ahead.

I used to be anti-iPhone, pro-choice/Android. Then I got tired of constantly tinkering, troubleshooting, and things slowing down. So I tried the iPhone and it was pretty much the opposite experience. Everything was smooth, reliable, and well-thought out/no hassle. There was a short period of getting used to iOS, and afterward there were still a tiny number of things I wanted to do that the iPhone wouldn’t allow, but it also had features that Android didn’t have, especially when it came to ecosystem. Overall the positives vastly outweighed the negatives for me. And though Apple is admittedly slow to add customizing features, in most cases they eventually do, so that want list got even tinier. Now I can’t even think of anything that Android offers that I want. And then privacy entered on my radar and now a non-iPhone isn’t even an option.

This was my exact situation before switching to the iPhone with the 3G. I’ve since tried multiple android devices but the experience is just not good enough for me.

Honestly, OP it doesn’t sound like this is the phone for you and what you enjoy

just return it and get a phone that checks your boxes. Otherwise you’ll grow to resent it

No body “needs” a certain device or platform. People use what they prefer. Some people prefer Apple and iOS products, some prefer other devices. Once you know what you value and enjoy out of a device and what “worth” is to you, get that device. Doesn’t sound like this Phone is for you.

At least you were good enough to give Android a couple more tries. I had no such grace. Though I didn’t move to iPhone until the 4S.

I recently bought a new iPhone SE. This is my first iPhone. I paid the extra 50 bucks and got the 128gb model. All and all it was just under $500 after taxes.

So with this state of the art phone that I paid all this money for, why on earth can I not set my ringtone to what I want??? The process of doing so seems like it has intentionally been made difficult. I have the file, I want to just drop it in the system folder for ringtones, but no, i can't do that.

Also, Why am I not allowed to see the directory for the file system on my phone? I took some photos today and found that they automatically saved to iCloud. I don't want them in the cloud, I want them on my phone. I had to disable iCloud completely for it to save pictures onto my device by default because IOS just seems to never ask me or give me the option where I want to put my stuff.

So whose phone is it anyway?

I love my macbook pro and have been using it happily for years. But on my computer i have the option to see everything and arrange it as I want. It is absolutely beyond me that IOS for iPhone doesn't let me have access to the most basic functions.

Still, it has only been a few days. I want to like the iPhone. If it can work for me I will be happy, but this is not the experience i expected, to be fighting with the phone every step of the way for seemingly no reason at all.

What are the redeeming features I should check out? Is there anyway to solve these problems and I can have control over my phone or should I just return it?
Return it. Clearly you're looking for a different feature set in a phone if the first thing you're annoyed about the phone is about the file system. Why bother with an iPhone in the first place? Stop wasting your time on something you don't want.

Get the OnePlus 7 Pro or OnePlus Nord.

May also help you to watch some YouTube videos on the features of iPhones.

I’ve been an iPhone user since 2009 and it still surprises me the things that I didn’t know.
beat the purpose original idea "Work out of the box"

What's really interesting about this attitude is that since iOS 5 Apple has changed. Over time Apple has added a few things that used to be solely in the domain of jailbreaking.

NightShift, call blocking, Do Not Disturb active when locked, backup to iTunes over WiFi, widgets (since iOS 6!) and hey, a rudimentary file system! Just to name a few.

I argue about Apple's implementation of jailbreak tweaks (they steal and water them down) but the fact is they adopt them. In iOS 14, it's even rumored that we're going to get Apple's implementation of Callbar

So why is there always complaining about people who complain that they aren't getting what they want out of iOS and the iPhone/iPad, but never any complaining about when Apple implements new (ripped-off) features that these people expected or have been clamoring for?

Is it possible that as long as Apple does it the feature then becomes A-OK? But if Apple doesn't have it you're supposed to sit down, shut-up and not say anything about it?

I wonder…

I still use android quite a bit. I have to have them for work, so I have loads of android phones and tablets around. So dabbling in and out from android to iOS is kind of normal for me now.

Having said that I will never use an android device as my personal device, iOS rules as my personal device always..

Huh? Not sure what you're getting at. My point was quite simple. The OP expected an open file system, yet bought an iPhone, and now there's buyer's remorse. Thus the suggestion to return it and get a better device for his/her needs.

Pretty simple. Again, not sure what you're trying to get at. I'm perfectly satisfied with my Android as my primary driver for years.

You guys remember the good old days when carriers removed customization features like ringtones and backgrounds from phones to push you to pay for a subscription service to have them?

Seems like an American thing. It’s not really an issue in other countries.

Theres about a thousand articles on these subject. Yes, Apple doesn't allow as much easy customization a-la-thumbdrive but it more than makes up for it in other ways.

Thing is, is not up to us, it is up to you to decide if the phone is right for you. Everything else you mentioned (you can do ringtones easily on iPhone), does not appeal to me as a reason to get an Android phone, but to you it seems like a deal breaker. Perhaps, you should go back to android, I did and I hated it and came back to iPhone and will never switch back, in your case it may be the reverse.

True, but a point of clarification. Not necessarily invented by the jailbreaking community. Jailbreaking community did what others before them did...take good ideas and incorporate them into the packages.

As far as the OP goes, there is a chasm in the philosophy of ios vs android. Both take getting used to and neither are intuitive to the point of being able to manage the environments at the snap of a finger.

So, care to tell me then how the iPhone does not fulfill that requirement?

You can use custom ring tones out the box. To add new ones there is an extra step, just like, for example, add apps.
thats something part i hate in ios . For good user experince(ux) you should minimize step not increasing step. Assume as user as dumb as possible which will destroy the system.

Not blamming as in android we dont have or took care of legitimate mp3 as ringtone .

I got the iPhone first back in '07. Iirc, my choices were between iPhone, Blackberry and Palm Treo and the iPhone won.

I've dabbled with Android but I find myself mostly just tinkering with it as well instead of actually using it. I think the most annoying thing for me on Android is I can't use ad blockers in Chrome.

The iPhone is "boring" but for my daily driver that I just need to work, boring is good. Besides, I need the iPhone for NumberSync and SMS forwarding to the iPad.

"Good user experience" is highly subjective.

I'd argue that iOS is exceptionally usable 'out the box'. In fact I'd imagine most folk have never even plugged it into a PC or Mac ever and use it exactly as is.

Extra Custom ring tones aren't nearly as popular these days as they used to be. In fact I rarely hear many cell phones ring these days and even when they do, they're all using vendor supplied ring tones.

The iPhone is fully functional 'out the box'. It supports extra functionality with apps etc.

Just an addition to this I’d also like to mention that I am one of those who likes to know if a text or call is coming from a certain person who has more value in my life than average. So I do assign custom ringtones and text tones to people to identify them even without looking at the phone. But even for that I just choose one of the other tones provided by Apple.

Making a song as your ringtone is so 2000 that you might actually end up attracting weird looks.
