2 reasons why i would suggest buying Apple Care:

1) Apple computers and components they use aren't as solid as they use to be. HDDs, Optical Drives, LCD Displays; they're all prone to malfunction at some point.

2) If you have an iMac or Mac Pro, you can request an onsite technician if you live within 80km (50 miles) of an authorized apple technician (Apple Store, etc.) Not having to pack and carry a 24" iMac across town for them to solve the problem by pressing a few buttons (or the like) is worth it. Onsite technician is not included in the first year of warranty, so if you're going to buy apple care before your first year is up you might as well buy it now.

adding RAM does NOT void your warranty! RAM is user installable and only requires removing one screw at the bottom of your iMac. the process is clearly documented in the iMac manual and does not require you to "open up your machine." it is advisable to remove third party RAM before taking your iMac in if there is a problem but that is just to remove one more variable in the troubleshooting equation and something the techs would do anyway.

wow, mac's have really advanced - i have a powermac, which, like a pc, you have to take the whole thing apart to upgrade ram....
