why is this so hard. Ok so I cant restore it because the network always times out when the update to restore finishes.

EDIT: This keyboard freezing is goingto make me throw it at a wall. All my favourite apps also act like crap.

EDIT EDIT: Wow this is a piece. The mic isnt working anymore and the speakers dont play sound. EVERY app is laggy and crashes and overall this thing is garbage. I mso mad right now

Dude... you don't have to do anything over the network to restore it.

Power off your phone. Hold down the Home button while you plug your phone into your computer. iTunes should tell you the phone is in recovery mode.

Now you let iTunes recover the phone. Do NOT restore it from a backup.

Once it's totally set up, run BlackRa1n. Make sure to tell it to do Hacktivation.

No network connections to time out.

Now you'll be able to use the device but you won't have a cell signal. Connect to Wifi and run the BlackRa1n app on the iPhone (should be there after running the desktop app). Use that to install Cydia and BlackSn0w.

With BlackSn0w installed you should be good to go with your unlocked SIM.

If recovery mode doesn't work you'll have to do DFU mode. The rest of the steps are the same. If you still have no luck, please be a little more specific about your issues.

@rappytaffy1

When you buy a used phone, the first thing you should always do is restore it to official Apple IPSW and choose set up as new to get rid of any issues it has.

Trying to throw more crap into someone else's nightmare is never gonna work.

Why do you think they sold it ?? Cause it's buggy. laggy and slow !

ok well it resotres and updates. When it wants to update it timesout

Dude, you need to just do a fresh restore. It will download the ipsw and then it will install it.

Once it finishes installing, make sure to select it as a brand new phone. Then the phone will activate itself. After it activates and goes to the home page, turn off iTunes, then download and start up blackra1n. Click "make it rain" and the phone should jailbreak.

Give it about 2-3 mins. Once it is finished jailbreaking, click the blackra1n icon on your iPhone screen and install cydia. Restart the phone, then install sn0w.

You should be good to go after that.

Hmm I dont think you understand or maybe Im not saying it right but Itunes wont restore the iphone unless it updates the iphone software. Theres no option to skip the update. When it tries to update the iphone software to 3.1.2 it timeouts. I tried unplugging the internet but it wont even start the restore process unless the internet is working

Oh... So your COMPUTER is unable to download the file to update it? Is that what's happening?

If so you need the IPSW to update it and restore to that manually.

Link coming!

EDIT:
Link has arrived! :D http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750
Download the IPSW that is meant for your device. I'm talking about the latest 3.1.2 version of it. Now you need to get the phone into recovery mode but when you click restore I think you hold Alt and it will let you chose what IPSW to recover with. Use the one you just downloaded. At that point you will be locked out of the phone and it will have a FRESH STOCK 3.1.2 FIRMWARE.

Now you run BlackRa1n and then install BlackSn0w and you'll be good to go. :D

When you download the ipsw with your browser you can put that file anywhere. Then in iTunes you can hold down option/alt + click restore and it will ask you to locate the software package. Select it and you are good to go.

IPSW doesn't work at all. Tries to update then says an unexpected error occurred. Now my iphone is stuck on resotre loading screen. FUUUUUU, It worked good when I bought it 2 days ago. Just a little slow. What is going on. Itunes just doesnt wasnt to help me out at all

EDIT: When I turn it off and on its stuck at connect to Itunes screen. Im scared because the reason I bought this used iphone is because my other used iphone(that dropped in the toilet) acted exactly like this and failed to work with Itunes like it is now.

Judging by the statement above it seems like it's something hardware related (either your USB cable or your computer).

Have you tried restoring on another computer?

Y I think Im just gonna have to try it on my moms computer or sisters laptop. If this fails then I give up :(

ok, i'll try to make this sound as simple as possible for the iPhone 3G:

1) restore your firmware to original 3.1.2 ipsw. when that's done don't restore from backup.

2) jailbreak using pwnagetool/whatever you prefer. make sure cydia is installed. again, don't restore from backup.

3) go into cydia and add a repository called http://blackra1n.com in the manage > sources section.

4) enter that source, and there should be blackra1n download somewhere in there.

5) install it, reboot the phone, and BAM!

6) sync your purchased apps and songs.

Thank you everyone. Espiecally vivi, baka and definitive. All I had to do was reinstall itunes. I guess it want working good. Its no longer laggy and I used black rain.

Im getting a no sim card installed notice everytime I slide to unlock. No big deal but when I plug it into itunes can I still upload songs?

You get a no sim notice but you do get your Cell service? That's odd...

Also, songs and all should work fine.
