My ONLY gripe is Instant Messaging, because it's one of the primary ways we communicate at my company.

I'd like to see iChat on the phone as well, and I'm pretty sure it's coming soon. In the meantime I've been using Meebo as an AIM client and it works pretty well for me. I'm not trying to tell you to upgrade, you do what's best for you. Just letting you know about this alternative...

Thanks for the kinds words.

When I bought the iPhone, Instant Messaging WORKED, thanks to third parties.

By your logic, everyone should STAY at 1.0.0 or whatever level iPhone when they bought it, and NOT upgrade to 1.1.1 because "we should use what we paid for, period". Why upgrade unless YOU are UNhappy?

You still don't get it, do you? People have talked about updates breaking 3rd party apps since they were first released. Buying iPhone because a 3rd party app is available for it is still a dumb purchase IMO. When Apple openly says they do not support 3rd party apps, it shouldn't take a genius to figure out that in the future these apps might be broken. I would never buy a device that costs as much as iPhone unless I was happy with what it is right out of the box without any upgrades.

I am not saying people should stay with version 1.0 either. I am saying that people who bought iPhone should have been happy with it as it was and these updates from Apple are simply an added bonus to what already was the iPhone. No matter what Steve Jobs said, Apple doesn't need to give anything new to iPhone. I lost my ringtones with 1.1.1, but it doesn't mean I am gonna go crying about it and try to sue Apple.

I have taken it a step further. I am one of those types of people that everyone runs over to ask advice on a new purchase. I tend to have the newest toys (or at least played with them). I have recommended close to 20 people to get the iPhone (at least 75% of them had gotten it as well).

However, I am now telling people to wait until we see the end result of the 1.1.1 disaster. So far, I have only stopped 1 person from buying it, its progress none the less.

I am so pissed at Apple for this move, its going to hurt them pretty bad in the end. The cell market is an interesting place where a single mistake can cost you tons of customers and they are near impossible to get back. For example, I stopped purchasing Motorola phones about 6 years ago and after the Treo 700p, I won't buy another Palm product. Motorola has a chance to get me back, Palm doesn't. (Just to give you an idea on where I stand)

So, until Apple fixes this problem by either opening up the platform or proving the missing applications. I highly recommend everyone do the same to encourage people to not buy the phone until its solved.

I'm just suggesting that people who want native Instant Messaging should avoid installing 1.1.1
Fixed that for you.

Swap a few words that can be read emotionally by others and now your advice is pretty much the same as everyone elses. :)

I highly recommend everyone do the same to encourage people to not buy the phone until its solved.
I give my advice on a person-by-person basis. If the stock iPhone will suit the persons needs, then I'd have no problems at all recommending it. If not, then I won't.

I'm going to boycot apple now because I'm mad that I can't use my windows mobile emulator on my iPhone after 1.1.1!!!

j/k :D:D

All of these boycot threats and class action lawsuits are quite amusing and entertaining.

I would have read this whole thread, but I'm too busy having fun with the Wifi music store and all of the other 1.1.1 improvements.

Apple isn't losing money by having a few people "boycott" 1.1.1. You TALK big, but the truth of the matter is that any song you would have bought on the Wifi store (but can't), you'll eventually buy through the regular iTunes store, anyway. Don't say "I was going to buy a ton of music through the regular iTunes store but I won't any more because of 1.1.1", because that would be a lie.

At any rate, I'm now purchasing all of my iTunes music exclusively through the Wifi store just to spite all of you whiners and let Apple know that I appreciate their efforts. For every song you don't buy through the Wifi store, I'm going to buy two.

I'm sorry but apple would not care.

The people who are willing to boycott probably are the same people that are not going to use the new Music Store anyway, besides the updates probably cost apple some money.

Funny you mention the iTunes store ... this year I purchased close to $400 in content. After the ring tone ordeal I have slowed my purchases down greatly, I am still pretty upset on how they handled this. After 1.1.1 I have ceased purchasing any new content from iTunes.

I am not going to purchase anything else from iTunes until Apple deals with the iPhone correctly. (For example, not pissing off honest customers)

What will I do for my content ? Steal it ? No, not at all. I am just going to either use (online) competitors or brick and mortar. Good thing Amazon just released their DRM free store.

So yes ... Apple is losing money. I had originally planned buying my girlfriend an iPhone at the beginning of next year, however that also is not going to happen either. From me alone, Apple is looking at losing close to $1000 in the next year alone. Sure, I know not many are going to the steps I am ... however, some will.

FWIW, in some other countries, "Apple ARE" is quite correct.

Out of interest, where?

But anyway, we are using English here, and I suspect the vast majority of people who write "Apple are" are saying this more out of grammatical ignorance than out of country diversity...

I *DID*. It's called an iPhone with 1.0.2.

And what happened to your iPhone 1.0.2? Did it get stolen? Did a cat bury it? Did it fall into a big pot of soup you were making?

You had a phone that did what you wanted last week. Why don't you still have it? And if you do still have it, what is there to complain about?

To boycott something means you refuse to purchase it.

1.1.1 is a free update. So, there is no way to boycott it.

Go outside and get some fresh air. You need it.

Thanks for the kinds words.

Steve Jobs also told us that this was a "Breakthrough Internet Communications Device". That was back in January at Macworld, at a time when every free phone has IM. He said THOSE phones (one of which I owned, a Nokia e62, were "crippled" in his words. It had IM.

I never mentioned those other technologies. My ONLY gripe is Instant Messaging, because it's one of the primary ways we communicate at my company. Keep in mind that with my 1.0.2 iPhone, I AM HAPPY. Stop trying to tell me that IM is an unreasonable request, or that I need to sell my iPhone. I'm just suggesting that people who want true Instant Messaging should boycott 1.1.1. If Apple releases iChat, as I'm amazed they haven't, then the dynamic changes.

Pay attention. I agree. I wanted what I purchased. I don't want the 1.1.1 "downgrade".

This is a lot like Windows XP SP2 or Vista, both of which I consider downgrades and would recommend avoiding. Security fixes are in there, obviously, but so is a lot of code that most users don't want. And some apps/tasks stop working...sound familiar? It's the kind of thing Apple folks love to bash Microsoft over. For the record, Mac at home, PC at work.

I'm happy with my 1.0.2 iPhone, period.

By your logic, everyone should STAY at 1.0.0 or whatever level iPhone when they bought it, and NOT upgrade to 1.1.1 because "we should use what we paid for, period". Why upgrade unless YOU are UNhappy?

At the end of the day, it's a shame that iChat isn't in this "Breakthrough Internet Communications Device".

LOL! Let's jsut humor the idea here and pretend that boycotting an update would actually affect Apple. have you thought about the end result? Let;s say for a moment you get everyone who owns an iPhone to agree to boycott the 1.1.1 upgrade. Now, no one downloads the update, and Apple looks at the hits on their latest update, and realizes that nobody has downloaded it. I am sure the first thing they will do is say "Let's take all the revenue we did not make from the upgrades in 1.1.1. and use it to make another upgrade that no one will download. Dude, the way it works is this: When people stop using your product (or updating their use of your product) then companies stop updating their products. In other words, in your perfect world (Which could never happen but would need to to make any of your efforts worthwhile) boycotting 1.1.1 would have the opposite effect from what you were intending. OOPS!

In the meantime, if you need IM support, you should check out www.iphone.mundu.com. You get to it from Safari, it is a website not an app. It works great, and even thoguh it is not as fantastic as an iChat app as aprt of the software, it certianly gets the job done... oh yeah, and since it's a website, it offers IMing with the horizontal layout keyboard as well.

As far as ringtones go, Apple is not at fault. Just because you buy them in iTunes does not mean Apple gets to decide everything. I am sure music companies and AT&T had a say in this and are the reason for the $.99 charge. For all you know Apple wanted to do tones for free after buying the song, but this would not be allowed.

I think its utterly silly and greedy with the approach they took. I already purchased the content, and they want me to pay the same cost AGAIN for far less of the song ?!

Apple provides no way for me to use my own music. Lets say I am a musician, why has Apple decided for me that I am not allowed to put my own music as a ring tone ?

Sorry, but it just makes no sense.

What part about "Apple needs the major labels to stick around and provide content for the iTunes Store so that they (Apple) can sell more iPods, iPhones and AppleTVs, so Apple will probably do anything the major labels want them to, like not allow free ringtones" doesn't make sense?

Agree or disagree that Apple keeping the labels happy is a good thing, but you can't exactly pretend that Apple doesn't have to listen to what they say.

Yeah, so, welcome to the last 15 years. I don't know what rock you've been living under, but for the most part, all carriers block the ability of phones to use any mp3 you want as a ringtone. That way they can charge you $3 to use a 30-second clip as a ringtone. At least, that's how all of my Verizon phones were. You seem to be missing the point; it wasn't Apple's decision to charge $.99 for a ringtone. It was the content providers' (Read: music labels); Apple's hands are tied just like everyone else's.

god forbid they make you pay $0.99 for another song that is being pushed on them by the record labels. Why don't you just go here: http://mediamall.wireless.att.com/sf/storefront/endUserHTMLHome.jsp?dc=CF45508&pc=U

and buy one...its only $2.49 for the ringtone....that will stick it to Apple.

There's always at least one post like this a day here. Well as a lot of ppl have already mentioned, good luck with your fight.

Thanks for the advice, but as I've been saying, I need native instant messaging (like my "crippled" Nokia e62 and Treo 650 had, and my wife's RAZR has) because if you need always-on IM accessibility, a web app doesn't cut it. You could be logged out by their server, another web page could be launched by another app (e.g. email) replacing your IM web screen, and remember that the login and password are not stored. It's just unreliable. Native IM is a no-brainer for any free cell these days (or last year for that matter), and for Steve Jobs' "Breakthrough Internet Communications Device", it's shameful to be absent. I hope, and believe, Apple will get the message. Personally, I didn't complain about the price drop, because I felt I already received $200 of value in the time I owned it, but those who did complain made Apple take note. When iChat arrives, I will upgrade. But it won't come about while Apple's stance remains that Web apps are 100% sufficient... The change will come because of customers who challenged Apple to "Think Again".

BTW, funny you should mention Mundu. Here's what that page says: "[IMPORTANT] There are some compatibility issues with the new version of iPhone (v1.1.1) due to changes to the behaviour of the Safari Browser. These are getting fixed. Customers with the older iPhone (v1.0.2) can continue to enjoy mundu IM as before. " Seems like avoiding 1.1.1 remains the right call. Oh, and here's more from the Mundu iPhone FAQ:

How do I know when a buddy sends me an IM and I am not in the browser?
Currently we do not have an alert that comes up on a New message when you are not in the page.

When I navigate to a different page in the browser, will I be still logged into mundu IM?
Yes, you will be logged in and all your chats will be intact when you navigate away from the page. However, if you are away from the page for a long period of time, you may get logged out due to the limitation of the browser. We are working on automatic reconnect feature in future version.

LOL Threads like this are too funny. I'm not gonna boycott anything. In fact I have spent neraly $75 in the IMS since this update. How much did I spend before the update? Maybe $20 a year. I will be purchasing allot more music now with my iPhone. I practically refused to spend money on songs before the iPhone but with my iPhone, it's too much fun being able to download right to my iPhone and listen to in 20 seconds. Am I being an Apple "FanBoy"?

No, as it stands right now, I am typing this on my old two year old XP laptop.

I will still continue to update my iPhone with every new update, I'm not afraid and I don't mod my iPhone. I didn't lose anything with the 1.1.1 update, I gained some fun things with it. When I bought my iPhone, I was so impressed with it's quality that I bought a MacBook Pro a week later. Didn't need it, I have two laptops besides the MBP but I simply wanted it.

I know there are lots of people like me extremeyly happy with their iPhones.

Yeah, I agree. Mundu is not that great. But I guess if you NEED native messaging, that may supercede your WANT for an iPhone. Perhaps the iPhone is not the right device for you right now. I hope they do add it at some point, though, so you can use it on your iPhone. Now, if you'll excuse me, I NEED a chocalate cupcake even though the store down the street doesn't sell them, so I am going to go boycott them.

lol, jk!
