Ugh... now I'm not sure whether to wait for MVC to release a GTX680 with EFI or just go ahead and purchase a flashed GTX580. The only annoyance is having to download drivers from nVidia. Will the GTX680 work with built-in ML drivers?

I'm waiting for the 680. Hopefully its not too much longer now.

The guys at Nvidia have been busy getting the MBP drivers done.

I'm sure the slow speed of GTX680 will be fixed in 30-90 days.

Was same with GTX480 when the drivers first came out.

It was slower than GTX285 at first, but as they got the drivers up and running, it got faster.

I'm still curious how they are going to implement the 4 display outputs.

Nvidia cards wee always a max of 2 before, and the current working driver seems to still be limited to 2, but again they are very early "Beta" drivers.

Patience. I'll bet we have fast GTX680 before new Mac Pro.

don't think much will happen for kepler for a while, we got drivers for 650m, what else is there? next big thing will be new iMacs, probably with Radeon 7000 cards, which should be easy for netkas to make a firmware from considering he has been able to do so for the last two generations.

i happen to know better, there will be faster Keppler drivers in 90 days or I will eat my hat

Netkas won't be able to write an EFI for 7xxx cards until there are drivers

If Apple is going back to Nvidia, there is no reason to expect AMD drivers for 7xxx cards anytime soon, but you never know

for his magic to work, Netkas needs a Mac to appear with a 7xxx card in it to base EFI on.

If iMac comes with Nvidia too, there won't be any EFI for AMD 7xxx

I imagine it exists already in a rudimentary form.

I doubt that there will ever be full speed SLI type support, but it would probably show up as 2 GTX680.

USeful for CUDA but needing a small nuclear reactor to power it.

On that note, does this mean that there is hope for GTX 670 drivers as well?

Thanks for all your and netkas's hard work!

MBP 2010/2011 shipped with nvidia cards, doesnt mean iMac did.

I assumed apple won't release an iMac with radeon cards without shipping drivers for them.

you are welcome

and there is a god chance that 670 will work

i just got 680 working in Lion with the use of MBP 2012 OS files

they are linked at Netkas if anyone else wants to try them, may or may not work

Slightly off topic -- but if just did a clean install of Windows via bootcamp or dual boot -- would an SLI set up or a 690 work at least on the Windows boot side?

Would the Mac side still boot correctly?

I have a 690 coming next week to test in my 2010 3.33.

I couldn't get a 7970 to even boot into Windows so I'm a bit wary but hopeful I can get rudimentary support in OS X until the drivers mature. If a 690 works I think it'll be more than enough to keep the machine relevant into next year when updated models ship. If not I'm probably going to sell the Pro and might go with a RMBP for now.

I definitely don't expect SLi to ever work in OS X, but want the extra performance in Windows (and lower noise) the 690 offers.

^^^ in 6-8 weeks you may have something. Or never. How are you planning on powering that thing?

Would you mind posting here or PMing with how it goes?

GTX570 & GTX680 supported in 10.7.5 Beta

Yep, if you download the 10.7.5 Beta from Apple and install a GTX680, it will fire up once the machine finishes boot.

Thanks again to our green friends from Santa Clara.

Same drivers that are in 10.8 DP4.

Card is no faster than a GTX570...yet.

Another OS update or two and it should be a screamer.

I will be working on EFI shortly, but have a big design job for VidCon 2012 and will be busy with that until July 1st.

Just a quick note...the GTX 680 works for me in 10.8 DP4 but DVI only to a 30 inch Cinema. Mini-display (using a display adapter) to a 27 Inch Cinema does not work yet :(

Just curious, any new full support for any of the Radeon line in the 10.7.5 update?

690 Quick update

I'll have more on this in a few days, but the 690 does work under both OSX and Windows powered by the Mac Pro. I'm using 10.7.4 with the nVidia drivers and the Apple drivers posted by a netkas contributor, and have been mostly testing in Windows for the past few days.

For more configuration information: http://www.fightingbrevity.com/blog/2012/7/1/some-quick-notes-on-the-690-setup.html

I've had one hard-lock in OS X when playing a Windows Media file in Chrome, otherwise it's been pretty solid.

where did you find this cable: "Y-adapter taking power from the SATA bus and converting that to an 8-pin PCI-e power connector, which powers Port #2 on the GTX 690."? and did you plug the sata connectors into 2 ports on the hard drive harness? thanks

Y-adapter taking power from the SATA bus and converting that to an 8-pin PCI-e power connector, which powers Port #2 on the GTX 690.

You better stop that quickly until your 1k$ cards turns into smoke

And get external psu for second 8-pin port (actually its better to have second psu power both 8-pins)

Quick Question

Ok, so from everything here it sounds like 670's would work too in a Mac Pro w/10.7.5/10.8. Thinking of ordering an Asus one to put in a 3,1 Mac Pro. I'm curious if all functions outside of the boot screen (no EFI)? For example, DVD player, games (WoW, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, Valve games like L4D)? Also was thinking the 670 so that way I don't need an external PSU with them being only 2-6 pin plugs, plus most reviews say the general performance is very close to a 680. Either way it would be a nice step up from the 5870 I have currently.

Thanks for any input.

None of that works right now. 670/680 no faster than 570. Drivers need to mature. I wouldn't buy anything right now "in hopes" it will work eventually. You won't need an external PSU for 670. I want one too but will wait for things like gold master 10.8 + full speed driver availability and some success stories.

Something I noted was that a firm is launching a new card stating that it would 'fit' in the Mac Pro. Anyone knows if there are any drivers in ML? (first paragraph)

http://www.techpowerup.com/168552/ColorFire-Radeon-HD-7870-XStorm-Graphics-Card-Detailed.html

The standard workstation support doesn't fit in a Mac Pro so I think this is a mistake.

Also, requiring 2 @ 8 pin power plugs is going to make this an "external Power Supply Required" card, in which case the length of support is a minor detail.

As this is an Nvidia GTX6xx thread, you should start an AMD 7xxx thread if you want to discuss that card.
