I am torn on if I like that or not. On one hand, this keyboard could be like a traveling dock. Have it on a desk in desktop mode, then pull it off to be in tablet mode. I like that idea. On the other hand the iPad is really designed to be in a case with the camera bump and smart connectors. Also, it would have to be removed from the case anytime you wanted to use the Pencil, which seems like a real pain. Another example of having to take an extra step to make the iPad work which is what has always prevented me from replacing a laptop with it.
Still very torn. A few days ago I was definitely in. Now I am kinda leaning toward sticking with the smart folio keyboard.
I hear you. For me personally, I love using the iPad with the keyboard attachment, but also love using the iPad just as an iPad (tablet). Hate the feel Of having an iPad in a case. Like to be as minimal as possible with it.
The original iPad Pro keyboard cover I loved in that you could pull the iPad off and leave the keyboard cover sitting and easily drop the iPad back onto it. Ever since the 2018 iPad Pro (which I absolutely I love), I’ve just hated the keyboard folio. Dislike how it has to cover the whole back, and how if I want to remove the iPad for casual tablet use that I end up with a large floppy folio.
For those reasons I’m extremely excited about this new Smart Keyboard. Very interesting design all around, especially how the iPad floats in a way and can be removed with one hand. That + backlit keyboard + trackpad just really will transform the whole thing for me.
Gotta say though, I still miss the old days of a simple iPad + 4 pane Smart Cover. Something just so simple yet elegant about it (not to mention colourful!)
