Bring more ringtones!!!

Seriously, you got us a great product and two ringtones
to choose from! Around me every 2nd person has an iphone
and it's all "marimba" or "old phone". No kidding, everything else
is just some lame barking and farting...
How difficult is it to sell ringtones on iTunes? Charge 99c
per ringtone, make your $3-4 million and everybody will be happy...

yea why dont you give iphoneringtonemaker or ifuntastic. I used ifuntastic and it was super easy. I have had zero problems with my iphone. If you want ringtones that badly its definitely worth a shot.

You shouldnt be, if anything does go wrong then you can always restore your phone. If you have made a backup then restore with that and your iPhone will be just as it was before. But with the automated scripts, it should be fine.

You have nothing to be scared of, believe me if I can do it and not screw anything up, anyone can do it. You have nothing to worry about, especially if you are only going to be doing ring tone hacking. All you have do is create your 30 second clips. For ifuntastic, make a folder on your HD, put all your ringtones in there and when you run ifuntastic select the folder, select all your 30 second clips, upload them, remove the sounds you don't want from your iPhone, select your new ringtones, then press a few buttons and your done. The instructions are very easy to follow. Its so easy a cave man could do it!

As long as they open the option for those of us unwilling to pay for ringtones, selling snippets on iTunes is fine. But not for the same price as a full song.

Meanwhile, I use iFuntastic to put new tones on mine. I prefer 'different' than the norm. (Example: snippets from Blue Man Group or electronic classical music from Don Dorsey). These pieces would most likely not be offered on iTunes.

The hacks are not a solution. Some people reading that forum
might go for it, but most iPhone owners don't give a damn about the forum
or hacks. They need more choice too.
I'm sick of mirimba everywhere I go... And why do we have to go
the hack way just to have more ringtones? And then loose them anytime

I agree with the posters that it is fun to use your own edits of music for the ringtones.
I have used both iphoneringtonemaker and ifuntastic
I would recommend iphoneringtonemaker as it does not jailbreak your phone and is easy to use. It just pushes the files into the ringtone folder on your iphone
By the way iphoneringtonemaker did not force a restore during the update (unlike ifuntastic) and none of my ringtones were deleted.
It is a very simple app to use and I'm sure it follows the protocol Apple would use to push these files into the iPhone

How does iPhoneRingToneMaker put songs on your phone without jailbreaking it? My guess is that it does it without telling you.

It's not like jailbreaking is a bad thing, that damages your phone or termenantly ruins it and is irreversible.

No it does not use jailbreak. It didn't need to be restored either during the software update. And to the other poster, yes it is windoze but I run it in Parallels on my MacBook and it is super simple.

Thanks to all for the encouragement. I'll take the suggestion from megfilmworks (love that name) and try iphoneringtonemaker.
Sounds like it's not as intrusive.

Now I have a problem. Older Mac - no intel.
...but I DO have a PC. Any way to do this without 1st transferring all iTunes/pics/movies, etc to the PC so that Sync doesn't erase everything?

I have the same problem. Has anyone used a PC just for putting on custom ring tones (with iphoneringtonemaker)... and not had to sync it to iTunes?

Again, it's about choices. Any ready-made ringtone is still limited. I would think they'd have to be 30 sec chunks to be usable. Maybe I want a different 30 seconds of the same song.
Or like another mentioned...a different "tone". Something not available through iTunes but that I have a CD or mp3 of. Or how about a voice recording???
Anyone used to making their own ringtones is spoiled as to the possibilities. Bought ringtones from iTunes would make some happy...but not all.

I had heard the way itunes was going to do it was .99 cents for the song and .99 cents to have any 30 seconds of that song turned into a ringtone. So $1.98 total but you also get the full song for your ipod. Not bad considering some cell carriers charge up tp $2.50 just for the ring tone.

That might be the problem right there. Being a new customer with AT&T I'm not sure how much they sell ringtones for or if they even do. I wonder if they had already worked out a deal on ringtones, games or anything else Apple might sell for the iPhone on iTunes. If not AT&T might be trying to get in on the action.

The PC copy of iTunes should have sync automatically turned off. Don't sync it, just cradle it and the PC will recognize.
But make sure you turn off the "automatically sync when iPhone is connected".

It hit me that I remember seeing a "ringtone" tab on iTunes.

So I'm wondering why it hasn't happened yet.
My guess is that as AT&T sells them for 2.50 (I believe - it's been a long time since I bought) and Apple sells MP3s for .99, there would be a problem with the ATT/Apple partnership.
Apple can't possibly charge more for ringtones than for whole MP3s.
AT&T can't possibly permit someone selling ringtones to their subscribers for less than they sell them themselves.

I have a feeling that the delay is the two of them working out the issue.

Anyone know?

Well $2.00 is about what they cost on other carriers. The only difference here is you get the full version of the song as well as the ringtone. I dont think that other at&t customers would get pissed off because i think iphone customers are viewed apart from other at &t customers. Most people dont associate the iphone with at&t they associate it with apple. And really this whole apple, at&t thing is truley unique. At & t soley handles the phone and data service and the rest is all through apple. At & t has a very large extensive website for ringtones, wallpapers. video clips & everthing else that can be downloaded to your phone but its not available for iphone. Why do you think that is? I think it was not part of the deal from the beginning and that itunes is working on a big release of all these things only for the iphone and only available from apple.

Ringtones is one of the most simple additions for a cell phone and it is ridiculous that we should have to hack our phones to get some. I was very patient at first because I thought it would only be a week or two before they unlocked ringtones, I didn't expect over 6 weeks. Get with it Apple, people are becoming less and less patient waiting for ringtones and other updates.

I totally agree that it has taken way to long to bring ringtones and other simple apps out by apple but you have to know that they are coming and when they hit you can bet they will be better then anything else out there now.

Seeing how they already had a iTunes tab for Ringtones I'm more inclined to think this is being held up due to an AT&T/Apple legal issue more then Apple not having it ready.

Of course that is just a guess
