Well $2.00 is about what they cost on other carriers. The only difference here is you get the full version of the song as well as the ringtone. I dont think that other at&t customers would get pissed off because i think iphone customers are viewed apart from other at &t customers. Most people dont associate the iphone with at&t they associate it with apple. And really this whole apple, at&t thing is truley unique. At & t soley handles the phone and data service and the rest is all through apple. At & t has a very large extensive website for ringtones, wallpapers. video clips & everthing else that can be downloaded to your phone but its not available for iphone. Why do you think that is? I think it was not part of the deal from the beginning and that itunes is working on a big release of all these things only for the iphone and only available from apple.

So it is your Opinion that if we the iPhone customers can buy ring tones at the rate of $.99 OR maybe get a song AND a ring tone for $1.98 that wouldn't anger other AT&T customers?

You know that it will be covered my major tech blogs. It wouldn't be something that would be hush hush. I just can't imagine there not being a backlash from the other customers who are stuck paying the HIGH prices for their media from AT&T.

Its like comparing apples and oranges. And we are only talking about 50 cents maybe the total will be $2.50 so as to not piss any other AT&T customers off. Honostly I am a little pissed off that I am a at&t customer and I can't use their site to download ringtones ar'nt you?

No I am not upset I can't use their site to download ringtones. I am more upset that carriers decided to lock down phones and made us start paying for ringtones.

I just know many carriers have been very careful to safeguard their service to provide ringtones, games, and extras and I'm sure (just my opinion) the hold up with ringtones and games is trying dealing with AT&T.

I hope that was all worked out before hand.........one has to think they had to have it in ink.........but you never know.

My guess is that the crappy speaker on the phone can't handle using many songs as ringtones.

My music ringtones sound great on the little speaker,
Rush, Led Zep, Beatles, and 20 others, loud and better sounding than on my Razr. The key is bit rate and bass limiting.

Seeing how they already had a iTunes tab for Ringtones I'm more inclined to think this is being held up due to an AT&T/Apple legal issue more then Apple not having it ready.

Of course that is just a guess :p

I also wonder if it has to do with a software change. When we all saw the ringtones tab at the original iPhone intro, it was probably different software. That was before YouTube and other things had been shown in detail on the phone. I would guess there is an issue with ATT though. The debate is probably over ringtone price and how much money ATT gets off of a ringtone purchase. Like I have seen before, $2.50 for a tone won't work when you can buy a song for $0.99. It would be nice if you could buy the rintone option for either $6 a month or however much per year that would allow users to make any song purchased in iTunes made into a custom tone. I am anxious to see what they come out with.

The PC copy of iTunes should have sync automatically turned off. Don't sync it, just cradle it and the PC will recognize.
But make sure you turn off the "automatically sync when iPhone is connected".

THANK YOU! I did it last night... it works great and is very easy. I finally have a use for my old Dell laptop.

Right now I am giving apple/att the benefit of the doubt to get things right, but if they come out and say they are going to charge for ringtones and not just let me use any song in my library, I will immediately start using ifuntastic!

Better get started early. I have a gut feeling no free ringtones are coming.

Devil's Advocate

It is very important to understand that the iPhone is one of the most important and complex devices to be released in recent history, and because the media has a certain passion for displaying Apple errors, the iPhone had to be perfect at the time of release. Steve Jobs personally carried and tested the iPhone for a t least 6 months prior to shipment.

Is it hard to believe that custom ringtones was simply not ready to be put on display for every critic to poke at? When Apple chooses to release the ringtone update it will have to be flawless. And you will not see it a moment before it is flawless.

I am fairly certain that 99% of iPhone users will want to have a custom ringtone. And if even 100 people out of 270,000 have a problem. It will be all over the news.

The speculation about AT&T wanting a higher priced ring tone would make sense if AT&T always blocked third party ring tones. As it stands, every phone I owned or worked with that was from AT&T prior to the iPhone allowed me to easily add my own ring tones from MIDI or some form of recording. My last phone, the Sony-Ericsson W600i (Walkman Phone), used an AAC recording I made in GarageBand for most of its life with no trouble, and at other times used ring tones Sony-Ericsson placed on their site as free downloads.

(In addition to the SE phone, I owned a Nokia 3600 and have worked with Moto RAZR V3's.)

I agree, the lack of ringtones most likely has little to do with AT&T.

How difficult is it to sell ringtones on iTunes? .
Actually, I think this has nothing to do with AT&T. My guess is that there is a fight with the music labels. I doubt AT&T is getting any cut into ringtones because Apple has demanded and got a hands off approach from AT&T. By this, I mean you don't see any AT&T imprint on the iPhone, no logo, no AT&T default website on Safari, no AT&T portal app on the phone etc. The way the iPhone is even setup with iTunes, it automatically cuts off AT&T from the loop when it comes to Ringtones anyway. So my guess is Apple is having problems negotiating the money sharing with the music labels because if you think about it, even at 99c per ringtone and potentially 10 -50 million iPhone users over the coming years, you are looking at potentially hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.

Sounds like you are describing how you could add ring tones on your past devices for free. Now this isn't the case. We might have Apple wanting to sell ring tones to iPhone owners and AT&T wanting in on the cut.
