I did!

Hey I just flew from Shanghai to Uruguay (35 hours) with my Imac 21,5 (2012).
I travel economy on Qatar airways and I carried with me the Imac, the trick was that I put in on a bag ( the ones you use to carry suits), when I did the check-in in Shanghai Airport they ask me if it was garments, I said yes, they put the allowed on cabin sticker and no more trouble.

The Imac was wrapped with bubble wrap, and I tried my best to get first in the plane so I had space in the overhead compartment.

Cheers!

I see you're new. Before you post check to see what date the last message was left. In most cases you don't want to be resurrecting old threads, the information may be out of date, people might have moved on etc.

Checking an iMac under the plane.

I travel on average 2 weeks a month on multiple planes with an iMac kit. I use the Tenba air series case. I've got about 50k miles on it so far and nothing but success. Tsa constantly removes it and checks out the case but I have yet to have any issues. These cases are a bit pricey, but for what I do and the use I get out of it, this has been the best option available. We also have a pelican case we customized to take an iMac so we can ship a secondary back up, but is way over the 50lb limit and is cheaper to fedex in case tsa misplaces my machine, like they did last week going through Denver.. We had success previous by just packaging the machine into the original packaging and then a second larger brown box filled with peanuts around he original box, but I get terrified at the thought of something sharp poking through the box and penetrating the screen. All in all, you can travel with iMacs and the Tenba case makes it way smoother and way more peace of mind. Also it's got wheels, makes it way easier to carry than having to get a luggage cart and race to the baggage claim, I can grab both my bags and walk away to wherever, and transporting locally is easier with this case as well, just toss it in the back of the suv and walk right onto set.

My 27" iMac is flying from South Africa to Europe this coming Saturday as check-in luggage... Will let you know how that turns out...
I am heading from SA to the UK too and need to take my iMac. Where did you buy your hard case from? and did you fly SAA? Did you just check it in when you arrived or take as hand luggage because they are being pretty useless with guidance. So appreciate a response!

While poking around B&H, I came across these bad boys (1, 2), but one would have to have a regular need to transport their iMacs to invest in something like them.

There are less extreme options in the vein of the old Cordura/foam bags used to move the original compact Macs, but they're still not cheap.

Even cheaper options also exist, but I'd hate the idea of allowing the stand to flop around freely like that, considering it's a PITA to replace, and not the most robust to begin with.
