British isles only navigon in app store £37.99

Just looking around and noticed that navigon have released a uk only version of the good nav software

reduced price at moment like Europe one

bit gutted cause I bought the Europe one yesterday - but still good value either way

looks like it's 1-0 to navigon

I was just thinking I might wait for a smaller set of maps. I might have to pick this up.
 
I'm in the car at the moment (passenger) and using navigon Europe for the first time properly

I must say it's really pretty good and for the bargain price of £38 then it's a good buy in my opinion
 
Don't know what to do now - should I get this at the reduced price or wait to see what people like TomTom bring to the table? Having said that, I already have a stand-alone TomTom device just wanted something on the phone for quick trips and emergencies. How are future map updates handled with these guys?

I think this would be ideal for quick trips and emergencies - sure it's currently fairly basic, but it seems to do what it does pretty well, and additional functionality is promised soon.

It looks like map updates are done on a fixed fee for 24 months worth of updates (going rate for their other devices seems to be 99€ for Europe-wide at least). iPhone version may allow more specific updates (e.g. British Isles only) for less though?

My first impressions of using it this morning were mostly favourable. I did have a bit of an issue with poor GPS early on, though that was presumably more the phone / conditions (though bizarrely this was in clear blue skies, wide open ground, and with the iPhone sat atop the dash - couldn't have got much more outside!) Once or twice driving along a straight motorway at 60-70mph it seemed to randomly shunt me onto a small parallel road - I would have hoped it would have been smart enough to realise that I was extremely unlikely to have driven cross-country at those speeds to get onto another road! Again, this was probably due to ropey GPS info it was getting, but I still would have hoped for the software to be a bit more resilient to it when driving along a motorway with no exits nearby. Once it worked out I was actually on the Motorway the rerouting was virtually instantaneous though. The voice is very clear (and this is through the iPhone speaker) and announces the road numbers clearly too (which I understand TomTom iPhone won't have).

As long as my GPS issues were more of a temporary glitch than something I can expect on most journeys then I think it's a £37.99 well spent, but if ropey GPS is going to be an ongoing issue then I can see it being worthwhile waiting for the TomTom with its dedicated cradle (with enhanced GPS capability).
 
I just took the plunge and bought this. Figure for this price it can't be bad and I have a feeling that Tom Tom will perhaps be a more expensive option and are less likely to have a special introductory price. Haven't yet been out in the car with it yet. Will report my findings when I do.
 
Remember to buy the argos 2x£15 itunes vouchers for £20 and it would then only cost £27.99. Also try quidco.com for argos cashback.

I did the same and I'm miffed cos I doubt I will ever use the europe maps. Serves me rigt for not waiting!
 
One question, I've got £30 credit on my iTunes account at the minute, if I bought this app, does that mean only £7.99 would be charged from my card, and the full £30 credit?

As for me, I will be waiting out for the TomTom app, hopefully it'll get here before June 30th, although I highly doubt it.

Nevertheless, £38 for the UK maps is a great price for a GPS app considering Navigon currently charge £80 for the PDA's.

interesting that when you click on buy now and then scroll down to the PDA version (closest I could see to iPhone) it says map updates have full postcode recognition.

I really hope that they include full postcode recognition in a future (free) update having said that though I have used the navigon europe today with no real problems. In fact I would go as far as to say I really like it!

hah! I'm scared of driving on the right! I drive so much in Uk I reckon I would go on autopilot. Actually I will need to check if maps of Malta are on the european version as i have family out there and we visit regularly

EDIT: Dagnabbit! They aint!
 
Nope, no Malta maps I'm afraid...

Driving on the right takes a little while to get used to, the best bet is not to start at night or when tired. Pop over on the Eurotunnel a Sunday morning and pootle around the Calais area. Just remember to go the right way around the roundabouts!

easier said than done. I live north of Edinburgh!

Ah. Hmm.. Any cheap flights to the continent from Edinburgh perhaps? We once rented a Merc CLK in Italy for about £40 a day, combine that with a ticket on a no-frills airline and you have a great short break!
 
Anyone got an suggestions for car kits suitable to hold the 3gs for sat nav use? (i.e. ones that stick on the wind screen). UK pref.

I was gutted to see that the Argos deal had expired, £27.99 for GPS software would have been a bargain!

I was gonna wait for TomTom but think I'm gonna take the plunge on the morrow, anyone know of any other offers on iTunes vouchers?

Also does anyone know of a good review (video or otherwise)? There are a bunch on YouTube but their all foreign!

I've recently purchased the navigon EU navigation and to be honest it's not worth investing in. I tested it on my usual journey to work, some motorway and some A roads. The software itself is fine, but it keeps dropping the gps signal. i was probably without a gps signal for at least 20 minutes of my journey (usually journey to work takes roughly an hour). This wont be replacing my dedicated gps unit any time soon.

I can see why tom tom is offering a car mount which includes the gps signal enchancer. the iphone definately needs it.

I tested it in some pretty built up areas, and it had signal fine, was much more accurate than google maps is when driving (gmaps is slightly delayed)
it was also very quick to realise i was going the wrong way (on purpose) and quick to readjust

Have to say that I've been suffering from this too. I've tested it on three legs of my commute so far (also about an hour and mix of motorway / A roads) and each time the GPS has been pretty flakey. Seems ok for long stretches and then randomly drops out for minutes at a time (and this is with the phone sat on top of the dashboard in the middle with only the windscreen above it - and wide open road, blue skies etc.).

That said - it isn't really a fault of the Navigon software (although it does seem to be overly sensitive to GPS inaccuracy - it quite often thinks I've moved from the motorway to a parallel country road, despite there being no exits around for miles!), it's more the iPhone's GPS being a bit ropey - as I often suffer similar GPS issues with Google maps.

I find it curious that not many other people are reporting such GPS problems though - I may try a full restore on my handset and then load my apps back on as a new handset (when I first activated it I did a restore from my last 3G backup). Can't see how exactly, but perhaps my backup has somehow got slightly corrupted. I sync all my contacts and calendar via google so that shouldn't be an issue.
