Have to say that I've been suffering from this too. I've tested it on three legs of my commute so far (also about an hour and mix of motorway / A roads) and each time the GPS has been pretty flakey. Seems ok for long stretches and then randomly drops out for minutes at a time (and this is with the phone sat on top of the dashboard in the middle with only the windscreen above it - and wide open road, blue skies etc.).

That said - it isn't really a fault of the Navigon software (although it does seem to be overly sensitive to GPS inaccuracy - it quite often thinks I've moved from the motorway to a parallel country road, despite there being no exits around for miles!), it's more the iPhone's GPS being a bit ropey - as I often suffer similar GPS issues with Google maps.

I find it curious that not many other people are reporting such GPS problems though - I may try a full restore on my handset and then load my apps back on as a new handset (when I first activated it I did a restore from my last 3G backup). Can't see how exactly, but perhaps my backup has somehow got slightly corrupted. I sync all my contacts and calendar via google so that shouldn't be an issue.

Dont suppose you're using a case on your iphone? I have a case on mine which might be affecting it. I'll try my journey home with the case off to see if that makes a difference. :D

I did have it in a Switcheasy RebelCapsule case (just plastic) for yesterday's two journeys but this morning's journey was the same story for GPS and I'd purposefully taken the case off just in case it was affecting things - so I don't think it's really a factor here (plus someone else said they were using a RebelSerpent without any issues and that's virtually the same case as mine.

My current hope is that a full reset of the phone and then a restore in iTunes will help things (since I'm also experiencing very poor battery performance - which may or may not be related). Once that is done I'll see if things are any better. If not I guess I'll just have to wait and see if the TomTom holder with enhanced GPS is any better.

Which model of car are you driving as some manufacturers put a metal film in the glass to cut down on heat and this kills GPS signals inside. Renault are especially bad for on-dash GPS reception.

ok cool, let me know how you get on.

i drive a peugeot 206. dont think i should have any problems as my dedicated sat nav unit has no problem with getting/retaining a decent signal

I have seen in various reviews that they are due to release a 'lite' version of navigon mobilenavigator for iPhone in the next week or so, so i would recommend waiting to the 30th to see if that comes out

I will try and post the source later

quick update:

Restored my iphone last night and tried navigon again on the same route to work this morning. It was almost faultless this time. first 10 minutes of journey started with the same problem as yesterday (signal dropping out every so often) but after that it didnt lose signal at all! Even when i got to the roads where they are covered by trees, the sat nav continued to work. quite impressed considering the weather isnt all that today :D

ok so... i took the pluge and got this version of navigon, I've had a small play with the UI which is nice and basic the way I like it. The price point is just right for me as I am not a delivery driver, I just want it for casual use, and I have a feeling tomtom will go in at £99.99. I'm drivin to Reading this evening so will give it a go on the way there and post my thoughts tonight

Well, i'm stuck on my iPhone 2G so I'm just gonna sit around and whistle for a while till the 3GS comes down in price on eBay and just hope that the value of the £ increases

Used Navigon on a recent 2400 mile roundtrip to mainland Europe. It performed well most of the time but suffered from the obscured view of the sky when mounted on the lower part of the dashboard, but this is not the app's fault.

As a navigation tool it was very handy, the POIs came in handy when looking for a petrol station or cash machine in the middle of new town. All the hotels we stayed at were also listed so it was easy to plot the drive each day.

All in all I give it 4 out of 5.

Cheers,
Matt

Hey guys,

I've recently purchased the navigon EU navigation and to be honest it's not worth investing in. I tested it on my usual journey to work, some motorway and some A roads. The software itself is fine, but it keeps dropping the gps signal. i was probably without a gps signal for at least 20 minutes of my journey (usually journey to work takes roughly an hour). This wont be replacing my dedicated gps unit any time soon.

I can see why tom tom is offering a car mount which includes the gps signal enchancer. the iphone definately needs it.

which begs the question...if you stuck the maps on a 2g and plugged the 2g into the tomtoms cradle ,would it then work?
