After going through 4 phones in 12 months (LG Chocolate, BB Pearl, Nokia E71, T-Mobile G1) I finally bought an iPhone. I was actually quite happy with the G1, but after a recent trip to Six Flags, the phone got wet and the touchscreen stopped working.

Needless to say, this is the best phone I've used, and can't see myself switching to any other platform. I now see why the iPhone has such a high user satisfaction rating!

that's odd...I've switched from WM (touch HD) and am infuriated y how complicated it is, and the lack of simple things.

I had imagined that apples OS would be honed to perfection (especially since my biggest frustration is how severely it's locked down), but the amount of things I can't do is driving me mad!!

I will admit, that it looks gorgeous, the screen is miraculous and the speed is unsurpassed....

but...why can't I set different tones for different events?
why can't I set custom tones? (I have to have a phone that is virtually exactly the same as everyone elses)..what happened to a bit of individuality?
why doesn't it automatically configure itself when it detects my network?
why do I have three places in which to turn push email off?? why can't I set profiles?

MMS doesn't work
when I'm listening to music at a particular volume level and a text comes in (when my phone is set to a louder volume for texts etc), the phone stays at that level and nearly burts my eardrums when it switches back to the music...I could go on...

on my HD, I could do anything I wanted, and it worked...ok..a bit slow sometimes, but it worked.

hmm..I ranted a bit there...I really didn't mean to....just a bit of frustration coming out....sorry

I agree with twisted-pixel: There are frustrating limits to the iPhone which make no sense. I fail to see the advantage of taking a machine that can perform an infinite variety of calculations and restricting it so much. The approach is worthy of IBM.

and why do they restrict it anyway? surely they would be happy for developers around the world to make it better? All I want to do is give my phone a bit of individuality...I can't see why they wouldn't allow that.

The 3G S is my first iPhone and I adore it. However, while we're bitching, the 2 most glaring deficiences are no bluetooth of pics and music (security, my arse!) and no flash support for web. Camera flash and tones personalistion next.

Being new to the Apple community, I find it rather amusing when people (including Apple staff) get defensive and make up excuses and reasons why certain things aren't included. The main reason I can see, is purely a marketing exercise in order for the items to be included in future relaeses of the iPhone, thus stretching out it's life and appeal.

Like I said, I love my iPhone and couldn't imagine going to another product but I'm still finding it difficult to swallow Apples apparent we've-made-it-you-WILL-love-it pill.

That's apple. They have always created a fairly closed and locked down environment, whether you're talking about OSX, iTunes or the iPhone.

Good idea, give them some feedback

That's not apple but ATT, and they stated that it will be available in a couple of weeks.

Sounds like a bug, tell apple

Not everything is perfect but if you liked your HD better, then go back to it.

And it doesn't make my toast & eggs in the morning!

Seriously, what phone does all of these things? And if there is a phone out there that does everything, why don't you own that phone instead of the iPhone?

Hmm, I've not used mine for music in like 6 months but it didn't used to deafen me once a call was done.

why didn't you return the iPhone and go back to the HD?

agreed. why do people get so offended that people would like to see the iphone become more of an all rounder rather than a portable media device with a phone botched in to it? as it is anyone would think the ipod touch came first, and the phone was an after thought rather than the other way round. don't get me wrong, i love the iphone and wouldn't swap it for anything else, but it would be nice to see apple implement some of the suggestions made in this thread, like custom tones, different tones for different events etc. that sort of thing.

the palm pre is also very lacking in the ability to change custom tones... you can't even change the sms tone (apparently). Of course, the iPhone was out for two more years than the pre... It will be interesting to see what company fixes this problem first. I'm guessing Palm

I don't recall about the web flash support, but my BlackBerry Bold did all of the other things, and quite easily. I switched to the iPhone mainly because I was tired of carrying 2 devices all the time (Bold and 16GB iPod Touch) and while I absolutely loved the iPhone from the get-go, I was originally disappointed at the lack of customization options out there. Then I jailbroke, and all was well in my world. :)

That said, I'd still like the ability to make custom SMS tones, but I'm not going to die if I don't have them, I guess.

to me, jail breaking is a make or break...i couldnt use the stock iphone...not that it was a bad device...just doesnt do what i want it to do.

JB adds in SOOOOOOOO many options in terms of apps....some of which, i could not live without it.

iBlacklist
iRealSMS
Custom message tones
quickscroll
Cycorder (since i have a 3G, 3GS has its own video recording)

The ability listed above are my top 5, if we lost the ability to JB and i lose these, i would sell my iphone and get something else. There are better phones, better for emails and such...but since JB gives the iphone sooooooo many choices, its almost a perfect device.

Agreed. If I couldn't JB anymore, I'm pretty sure I'd get a blackberry or the Pre. Running apps in the background is the most important for me.

Ohh man, forgot backgrounder....another make or break for me also.

Well if you accidentally upgrade to 3.1, my Bold is for sale. ;)

Im sure they will be able to JB 3.1, its just a matter of time. Also, you can downgrade now to 3.0 from 3.1 and jailbreak..however, if you upgrade to 3.1, you upgrade the baseband and atm, lose your ability to carrier unlock.

Seriously? Is the iPhone your first smartphone or something? Every smartphone I've seen in Asia (the many times I've been there) has all of those abilities, and they are dominated by Nokia and Motorola.

A better question IMO would be "What smartphones don't have those features?"

...and now that I actually took 5 minutes to bother to search on how to create SMS tones and SSH them into my phone, that one last thing that bugged me about the iPhone has been resolved.

Jailbreak, my friend. Otherwise, these are the limitations most of us choose to live with using the stock OS.

sounds like you need a blackberry.

E71?

I'm interested to hear your feedback on the E71 and the differences/advantages of the iPhone over that phone. My school is considering getting E71 for all students and I am saying that iPhones/iPod touches might be a better route. Thoughts?

The E71 is a GREAT phone. There are tons of apps available for symbian, but the quality of the apps are no where near that of the app store / android market. That is really only the only advantage I think that the iPhone has over the E71. Unless you must have a touchscreen, the E71 is great. You can customize every minuscule detail, just like WinMo.

I could type faster on the keyboard than I can on the iPhone (although I haven't used the iPhone for that long). Oh, and the battery life is FANTASTIC!

But for a student, the apps in the app store are extremely useful... I just found iStudiez Pro, and it's amazing.
