It appears that some customers are experiencing delays much longer than expected for shipping of their custom-built Mac Pros. The example given at the link was ordered in late March, and has not shipped yet. The quoted reason is that it has to come direct from China, but aren't all BTO Macs shipped from there to begin with?

Already quite a few posts on this.

Likely explanation is either refresh or discontinuation is eminent, depending on who you talk to.

I just came from China and it took 16 hours to get to Chicago. :D
This reasoning "is that it has to come direct from China" makes no sense.
How long does it take to build a computer anyway?

Or nothing at all.

Eh, too many reports for it to be a blip. There doesn't seem to be a component pattern either.

BTOs are different. They are built on the line. Non-BTOs are just stored in boxes and stockpiled.

BTOs having issue implies something has changed with the production line.

I think if Apple is going to discontinue the Mac Pro, they will sunset it like the Xserve. They'll announce its termination, but allow people a period of time to purchase. So, I think a sudden EOL seems unlikely.

probably a refresh, I got back and forth in my mind over and over again. If it were up to me? I would expand the Mac Line up. Offer the Mac Pro, Mac, and iMac. The Mac having desktop components, the Mac Pro enterprise class like it has now, and iMac and Mini containing mobile components. This way they can update the "Mac" every year like the iMac and Mini offering those who need more than an iMac and less than a Mac Pro something to bite into each year. I would say thats a MASSIVE audience. Sure would put a hamper on the hackintosh scene.

being someone who has owned many macs since the beginning as well as built quite a few Hackintoshes would like to say that I would invite the idea of a "Mac" as well. and if priced right with enough expandability options, would really put a hurtin on the Hack scene seeing how many wouldnt mind owning a real mac if it had the options their gigabyte mobo had. but....that area isnt what apple seems to be going after after all. the consumer that dont have any desire for self improvment(besides ram, HDD size). I dont want to see the MP leave.

I work with Hackintosh, and i Like "Mac" idea. Mac Pro was always dream machine for me, but it's too expensive due server parts, Mac would be just fine, but i doubt there will be any because Apple force this "post-pc" era politics maybe too much they are elated with iPad/iPhone sales so much that they forgot desktop users.

They've based that entire article on one person's order being delayed. They also had an article last week telling us that Amazon had run out of one model; the current article now claims that they are back in stock. So what was the point of the previous article? If one store runs out of iPads, does that mean that iPads are about to be discontinued?

Is it just me, or are these articles utter garbage and alarmist? There has been no word or indication of any kind from Apple that the Mac Pro is doomed, yet web sites like Apple Insider and forums like this are full of people claiming that this is the case. No-one knows a thing yet. All this guessing and repeated threads on the topic are becoming tiresome.

The title of this thread should be changed to "BTO Mac Pro facing long delay for one person. Everyone else fine."

Nope, it's not just you. Remember that the Apple rumours sites are not news sites since there is very little official information so they make up a lot of stuff to get clicks since it's all about the ad revenues. A sensational alarmist headline is something that more people are likely to click on.

I was toying with the idea of buying a pro, some guy offered me the right deal on my 27" iMac, I phoned my sales guy and he told me to hang onto my iMac ( July 2011) for now...not like apple to turn down a sale, a refresh is on the cards, and is sorely needed too.

Very good point - can't we get them built whilst they are being shipped on the plane? :D

Other possible explanations...
  • The Mac Pro Production line may only be run a few days every 2 or 3 weeks to fill CTO orders.
  • There is a parts issue with some piece and that needs to be resolved before more Mac Pros are built.
Most likely it's a new Mac Pro model coming out sometime in the near future. Although Apple has been known to announce Mac Pro models a few weeks before they are ready to be shipped.

Wirelessly posted

So at what point do we just assume there will be no more Mac pros? Seems to me that time is near.

No need to assume ... Apple will make it clear either with new models or a statement of EOL per the XServe product. As long as the EOL statement is not forthcoming, there is hope.

The fact that how Apple has handled this is frustrating seems fairly widely accepted.

Eh, delays are way way too long for that. And CTO is generally filled within 24 hours, not 2-3 days.

There is a parts issue with some piece and that needs to be resolved before more Mac Pros are built.

This is the more likely of the two possibilities, but again, the delays are pretty long, and there doesn't seem to be a pattern to the delays that would be implied by a component issue.

This is the sort of thing that always happens before a refresh. All the orders stall and Apple refuses to give a new ship date, or the new dates they give are also wrong.

Yeah, the parts are so old as to be obsolete..... Seriously, at some point aren't these parts EOL'ed?

The problem with assumptions is that they are so quickly and so often proven wrong. Until there is an official announcement anything is still possible.

Of course, sometimes you have to make assumptions in order to move on with life. One would hope that they would either sunset the product or announce a replacement soon, but the Mac Pro could simply become the next iPod Classic.... destined to be sold forever, in ever-decreasing quantities, with neither a replacement nor a cancellation. There's nothing wrong with making a personal decision to assume the worst if no news by a certain date, then move on with life.

None, considering they have done nothing out of their habit for product refreshes. This whole EOL thing was someone freaking out about how important the iOS business is right now for Apple and thinking they wanted to get rid of everything non-consumer. It actually has no fact other than rumours of most likely other people feeling the same way, nothing to do with reality, simply a snowball that kept growing out of "fear".

If Apple does update the Mac Pro I wonder what day of the week it will be. Both the 2008 and 2009 updates came out on a Tuesday I believe, but the original 06 and last 2010 were both announced on Monday's.
