Throw Home Assistant on a Pi and you can also make all your non-HomeKit smart devices HomeKit compatible in addition to making an Airplay receiver.

I keep a stash of AEs because they have digital out (via mini toslink). I just set one up an hour ago. They're sweet little audio distribution points. The optical out means the systems they're attached to can sleep and wake up when there's a signal, which usually doesn't happen with analog inputs.

Interesting post. I was looking to do something similar this weekend, but before I saw this post. We ended up using an old Apple TV (gen 2) and hooking it up to our receiver via a digital audio cable (according to a CNET article I read, they do sell a pretty inexpensive digital audio to analog converter) and it works great.
