I think you both gave great advice, but sadly, I tried this with my last two purchases, and they both came back as "within spec"

I even took my last one to the Apple store where my company buys boat loads of Macs and the Genius was great and honest about it. He basically said, 'yeah, it looks bad, and I can get you a new display if you want, but odds are it will look the same.'

This time around, I just don't have the time to be without my laptop. It's just a shame that Apple has taken an advocate who continually upgrades annually--including desktops, etc.--and sells others on Macs, and turned him into a "wait and see" and 'buy the last revision of a line every 3-4 years' customer.

That is a shame. A good business is built on good customer relations. Customers like you deserve more respect and quality than what you received. Again, sorry that you got treated this way by a supposedly good customer service company.

Agreed, I wonder if the quality wouldn't be much higher if products where built and shipped from the US instead of sweatshops in China.

I understand that Apple has QC problems and I'm sorry that the OP spent 3k and didn't like what he got. However, it sounds like he (or she) knew about Apple quality control problems for some time yet continues to buy Apple products. What is that quote...

"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

Fair enough. But unfortunately, there really is no alternative other than Apple right now.

A Windows box? Linux? No way.

My friend is a professional photographer and he had to return his fully loaded Octo-Mac 3 times, and is now waiting for the 4th one to arrive.

It got escalated to executive support within AppleCare. They promised "white glove" treatment on his third Mac. And when it arrived it had the wrong specs and a quality issue, he asked the woman what he was supposed to do at this point. Windows was not an option, especially for his line of work, he worked with Steve at NeXT so he was very loyal to Apple, etc., but he just couldn't get a computer which had no problems and was the specification he paid for.

I think Apple needs to get their act together before the competition realizes this is the soft underbelly of the Apple juggernaut. It is no longer the case that "only the unhappy people complain."

Something is definitely wrong in Cupertino.

I think before the powerbook G4, they were made in Taiwan (someone please correct if wrong). China has major issues...look at the dog food case. I think things need to go back to Taiwan.

Apple does need to get its act together. Switchers and loyal users alike will abandon the company if this keeps up.

Cupertino is suffering from a bad case of iPhone-itis. Hopefully it will clear up by June 30th, when Jobs can get back to his core business.

I feel that Apple has the chance of becoming mainstream and take over a substantial amount of the market, but so far, it looks like the Apple is beautiful outside but has a worm inside. As a new switcher, I hope they get their act together.

I've been a "switcher in progress" for nearly two years. Now that I'm finally a Mac owner, I agree with you whole-heartedly. Two years ago, I never heard complaints about bad screens or over heating. I think too much attention has been placed on this damn iPhone. Even though it's worth a lot (potentially that is), Apple should not have allowed the quality of its other products to go down the tube.

So true, and what a major let down that Leopard will be available in October only because of the iPhone. I mean, sure they are going to make a lot of money, sure it's nice... but they seem to be way too focused on the iPhone at the moment. It's just a phone, for how cool it is, I don't really care that much. I'm about to receive my MacBook Pro 15" on Tuesday and I feel like praying (I'm not religious) that it will be perfect when it arrives.

I guess there are no atheists in fox holes or Apple Stores:p I think your mbp will be fine. Leopard's delay also irked me. It sort of showed how Apple isn't ready to handle it all (at least not without some employment expansion).

iW00t, at first I thought it was just a wrong impression. But after reading quite a few of your posts, I have determined that you actually act like an ass in these forums.

How hard is it to be kind to the other people?

Great post i totally agree! No need for that post from iWoot!

It's true that QC at Apple has gone down hill. I think, as is illustrated here, that it's most prevalent at the pro notebook level. I hope that it doesn't reach the pro desktop or server level (Yikes, BWhaler!)

I work at a school and see lots of Apple desktops. We are struggling with the whole eMac and bad capacitor issue that cropped up a few years ago. Some machines are just starting to give up the ghost now because of this. Thankfully Apple has an extended warranty issue on this so it's covered without a charge. This, alas, was not Apple's fault as it was an issue that also hit HP & Dell.

The white MacBooks have been solid and staff that have used PCs exclusively before this are very impressed by the quality of these computers and by the MacBook's display. But for all intents and purposes, this was a computer that was practically engineered from scratch and is the only computer right now in the Apple line that is new with the Intel transition.

The iMac has been a solid product. We have a number of these. Intel and G5. So far so good. I have an iMac G5 at home and I love it. Best computer/design Apple has ever made. I am interested in the rumors of a totally new design to see how they are going to improve it.

At work I have a Intel Mac mini Core Duo 1.83 for general usage and it has been solid. It's never been turned off in the 9 months I have had it unless there has been a power outage and I have only had to restart it once because of a Toast/iTunes conflict. The 20-inch CD it's hooked up to is fabulous. I would love to replace the Mac mini part with a Mac Pro, but I am not sure yet. I have to take care of some other important things in the budget right now, so that's a maybe.

I would love to get a MacBook Pro 17-inch Hi Res and not have to worry about staring at a poorly illuminated display. Or worse yet, some other malady that has yet to come up. No one seems to be talking about the noisy headphone jack that hisses, squeals, and produces static noises. Grrrr....

Well, I was going to ignore you given your reputation around here, but I feel compelled to respond since I don't want Apple or other idiots to think this is acceptible.

I chose the 17" screen because--wait for it--that is what I NEED and want. For my work, I need as many pixels as I can get on the road.

You're clever enough understand that not everyone is you and has your needs, right?

But honestly, that is not the point. Having spent about 20 grand on these laptops since their release, they didn't use to be that way. Because I upgrade once a year, I can tell you the exact iteration where the screen quality hit the toilet: the last revision of the PowerBook line. These issues were not there beforehand.

I have the latest 17" PB G4 revision, and I had worked on the revision prior to that. I have no issues whatsoever with my screen.

On a side note, I have a completely silent unit. No fan speeds, never.

The thing you and others don't grasp is that you only tend to read about borked machines. Think about how many machines you hear about here (a central mac meeting spot) compared to the worldwide amount sold and then have a think. Really there aren't that many bad machines out there.

I'm not saying issues dont exist but i am saying stop and think about the bigger picture

Very true. It's also possible that other people aren't being as vocal as they could be.
We need something a bit more empirical to know for sure.

You may have seen my previous posts about this subject. I returned two 17" mbp's because the backlighting was the worst I've ever seen. I have a Dell e1705 with a 17" screen and it's perfect. Now take the mbp that costs twice as much and has a horrible screen. I've ordered a high res version online and I'm hoping it will be better, but I'm not holding my breath.

I recently purchased a mac pro online.. and according to FedEx it shipped from california.. is that normal? I know in the past all my laptops have come from china that is why I was surprised. Are the mac pro's american built?

Cheers

Perhaps an Apple Store around you had too many and so they shipped it from there. That does seem a little weird. I would think that building anything at the consumer level would be too expensive in the US.

Do not let the door hit your ass on your way out ;)

Last thing we need is more ass prints.

But seriously, there is a 15" model with a nice cutting edge LED screen, but no... you need a "Mac Pro" in a laptop and opted to go for a old fashion backlit machine, what more can you demand from Apple? After all it is such a sleek and pretty machine, some engineering compromises have to be made at some stage.

What would you have said to someone before the LED MBP came out?
"Why are you thinking about buying an Mac? The screens are **** without LED backlighting!"

Also, by "engineering compromises" do you mean faulty screens? I understand you can't always have the best, but what they give you should be without any noticeable defects.

I thought about that.. but it was a custom order! and it was even delayed over a week from the original ship date. So that seems like it probably isn't the case. I had a few options on it.. wireless, 2.0 xeon, and the x1900. Anyone else with info?

Cheers

It's still possible that an Apple Store employee added the extras you wanted. Although the extra week seems odd...hmmm. You're positive it shipped from the US after the first day? It didn't leave China in a few days and then ship within tehe country?
